The Work Package 7 (WP7) is oriented to application of results obtained from GPS permanent and epoch observation in the Central European region for geo-kinematical and geodynamical purposes. The input values for WP7 analyses will be the 3D velocity field and its covariance matrix. It is expected that the velocities of monitored points (the horizontal components and height component) will represent the kinematical behaviour of individual sites at the millimetre level. The velocity field will be then transformed to the strain field describing the neo-tectonic character of the territory. The transformation has to consider all stochastic parameters of the input information to obtain confidence intervals for all relevant characteristics which are interest for geophysical and geological studies. The final information will be visualized in the form of geo-kinematical maps describing the geometrically derived information about lithosphere deformations completed by geophysical and geological information.

Main purpose of Work Package 5 (WP5) is definition, mathematical model, practical realisation and systematic maintenance of geocentric reference frame suitable for geokinematical monitoring in Central European region. The realized frame is based on permanent GPS observations at more than 30 stations in the region. The long-term stability is obtained through combination with results (coordinates, velocities and their covariance matrices) of long-term observations by VLBI, SLR and GPS at some collocated European ITRF sites. As an intermediate reference for all CERGOP related activities serves set of permanent GPS sites with stable monumentation, suitable geological environment and homogeneous continues time series of GPS site coordinates.

The Central Europe Geodynamics Project (CERGOP) was initiated in 1993 [Fejes et al., 1993] and continued in 1995 as a European Union (EU) supported program. In 2003 the CERGOP-2/Environment Project, the successor of CERGOP, was commenced [Pesec, 2002]. The undertaken work in the CERGOP-2/Environment Project are shared and distributed to work packages. The work packages lO.x are formed to serve the main scientific users of the Central European GPS Geodynamic Reference Network (CEGRN) data. The work package 10.3 is devoted to integrate those geological and geophysical data that have primary importance regarding the present-day geodynamics of the Pannonian basin and its surroundings from the Adriatic microplate to the Carpathian Arc. This report is given about the works carried out between September 2003 and March 2004.

Within CERGOP-2/ENVIRONMENT project, a special attention is given to geodynamics models development for specific regions from countries that participate to the present project. For this goal, study groups were created (WPs-l0.x) which has the main objectives to monitor recent crust movements, to detect the borders of the tectonic plates and to quantify their three dimensional movement rates. These studies require a close cooperation between geodesists, geologists and geophysicists. In 1996 the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 461 "Strong Earthquakes: A Challenge for Geosciences and Civil Engineering" was founded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) as a German contribution to the UN initiative "International Decade of Disaster Reduction" (IDNDR). A central project, of this CRC, is the subproject BI "Three Dimensional Plate Kinematics in Romania", which studies the deformation determination ofgeotectonic units in the Vrancea Region (epicenter zone of earthquakes from Romania). In this purpose, there were accomplished by repeated GPS-measurements within a network which has been installed in 1997 - Fig. 4 (Ghitau, 1997, Dinter & Schmitt, 1999, et al.) and measured in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2003. This network was formed, at the beginning, by 26 stations, covering an area of 250 km x 380 km having the Vrancea area as the centre. At present, the studied region is enlarged to southern part of Romania and contains much more points. The geodetic DATUM is given by stations of the CEGRN the CEI-initiative CERGOP.

This paper summarizes the status of the current work on site equipment and monitoring within the CERGOP-2 work package four. Out of the approximately 20 new CERGOP-2 stations three are delivering data regularly and five more are installed already. In WP4 the model station recording in Munich is analyzed with respect to hardware calibration and data quality. First results on the analysis strategy for the usage of double- and zero difference residuals in the description of site-dependent observation noise are presented.

Activities on this work-package subgroup include preparation activities at the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Geodesy and field reconnaissance in the area of the Plitvice Lakes National Park. The combination of equipment has been tested in the field and it is now ready to be deployed in the Plitvice Lakes test area. The goal is to measure the Lake Koyak with the combination of precise bathymetry and RTK GPS (Real Time Kinematics). In the area of Plitvice Lakes, we were looking for the best positions (sky clearance, obstacles, satellite visibility, ground stabilization) for future geodynamic GPS-measurements. At the same time, we have chosen the points which will be used as base points/or hydrographic measurements using the RTK-method. The cooperation with the Croatian Hydrometeorological Institute was established in order to compare the datasets of previous hydrological measurements with current situation in the Lakes. In cooperation with the tectonic experts we prepare the structural map of the area of the Plitvice Lakes in order to find better explanation for possible movements of tectonic units in the area. The geological situation is particularly important for hydrologic assessment since the loss of mter (lowering of water level) in the lakes is caused by faults.

Partner UNIPD is responsible for WP6 Time series analysis and provides support to a number of other related WP's. The output of WP6 is foreseen every third month, beginning month 6. At this stage (month 18) we report on the successful generation of time series for all the permanent stations for which we have the data available, that is the EPN stations plus a number of Austrian and Italian permanent stations which are not part of the EPN. Our analysis includes the statistical and spectral analyses of the time series, whenever it is meaningful, i.e. for time series longer than 3 years. The analysis is based on the processing of normal equation files. Each one of them is obtained from the combination of two normal equations for each week, and the multi year solution embodies constraints on the position and velocity datum which are considered as state of the art. According to this combination scheme, more normal equations can be combined, yielding a unified network. We have also developed the presentation and communication framework for our results, in the form of a web page. As soon as time series for other permanent stations in the study area are available, they can be processed accordingly. A number of activities have been done in the support to other WP's. More precisely we have supported WP1 as follows: o Raw data (RINEX) from the newly established stations ASIA and ROVI are sent regularly to the Project's Data Center in Graz; o Processed (NEQ/SNX) files from a network including permanent stations relevant to the Project have been sent to the Project's Data Center and to the responsible of WP5, to prepare the basis for the time series which will be the input to WP6.

EN
The geodynamic investigation of the Tatra Mountains crust movements is a local subproject of the CERGOP-2/Environment supported by the European Union. This contribution analyzes repeated epoch measurements performed in a special GPS network in order to investigate tectonic motions within the Tatra Mountains region. This GPS network was established in 1998 and consists of 11 sites, 7 in Slovak Republic and 4 in Poland. The size of the investigated area is approximately 40 km by 60 km with maximum relative height difference 1800 m between sites. Epoch measurements were performed annually from 1998 to 2003. Processing of all GPS campaigns was done using the Bernese software 4.2 with the standard procedure. All GPS campaigns were connecting to the nearest five IGS GPS permanent stations. For determination of the velocity vectors two models were used.

This paper presents recent developments of the extension and densification of the Central European Geodynamic Reference Network (CEGRN). More than 20 new permanent GPS observation sites are going to be installed until end of 2004. Three of those are already operable. To aid a setup of similar design and quality a model station has been compiled and purchased by Work Package 4 of CERGOP-2 project. For all individual modules design criteria and important requirements are presented here. In this combination they form a multi-purpose reference station for universal deployment.
