Steam boilers of G-32 type. located in Skopje Steel Work power plant, initially proposed to use metallurgical gases from rotary furnaces, now belong (o the Electric Power Company of Macedonia, Branch "Energetika" Skopje. Under the recent operating conditions the boilers were fueled with heavy oil, causing significant environmental damages, since the plant is located in the city area. The objective of this work is to examine numerically the effects of the substitution of crude oil with gaseous fuel to the operation and performances of the G-32 steam boiler. It was performed using the computational fluid dynamics modeling approach. Fluent CFD software was used as a tool to create a three dimensional model of the mentioned boiler. The present simulations provide flow fields, temperature profiles and heat flux profiles to the furnace walls in case when boiler is fired with oil and, altematively, with natural gas. This approach provided far more information than was possible using physical model testing. Initially obtained results are encouraging, showing that the predictions are in qualitative agreement with the expectations and practical experiences.
