W artykule podjęto próbę przybliżenia związków kartografii z kulturą na przykładzie map Śląska powstałych w dobie nowożytnej (XVI-XVIII w.). Pokazano, jak świadomość regionalna mieszkańców, kształtująca się w tym okresie pod wpływem silnych bodźców społecznych (ideowych, gospodarczych, kulturowych), zaznaczyła się symbolicznie w ówczesnych zapisach przestrzeni regionu - na planach miast i mapach całego obszaru poprzez między innymi łączenie informacji topograficznej z przesłaniem ideowym. Przedstawione przykłady różnych form realizacji społecznych potrzeb wskazały na udział kartografów Śląska w tworzeniu jego wizerunku jako krainy geograficzno-historycznej ze swoją terytorialną specyfiką, ale i silnej dzielnicy administracyjnej, mającej bogate tradycje kulturowe, mocne podstawy ekonomiczne i ogromny potencjał ludzki, także w wymiarze intelektualnym, naukowym.

Symbolic space is usually associated with cultural and spiritual content which is reflected in the record or spatial landscape. The cultural and spiritual content includes caring for the past and tradition, strengthening or building identification with the region, creating its local uniqueness, searching for and discovering cultural identity. Symbolic space with internal semantic and axiological code has found a place also in European regional cartography, beginning from the earliest maps. It was present in an especially interesting way on maps of historical-geographical regions, which were shaped in a natural process of development. Their inhabitants, having a high level of regional consciousness and considerable cultural achievements felt a need to illustrate them in a spatial way. One of such regions was Silesia (Śląsk). The article shows, using 16th to 18th century maps of Silesia, various examples of how this particular need of marking cultural individuality was realized. They have been referred to entries which constitute the content layout. The first entry shows the Silesians' educational and intellectual ambitions using as an example information about the first school. The information was given on M. Helwig's map and corrected on the first economic map of Silesia by K.F. Hentschel. Next, social needs have been shown: cultural identification with the region, memory of spiritual and material values, pride on executing the law (with the examples of Głogów and Wrocław) and the emergence of legends about places, which were becoming emblematic for local community (Scholtz's garden in Wrocław). Instances of political re-sentiments, connected to changes in Silesia's borders (the świebodzińska enclave on J.J. Lidl's map) appearing on the maps have also been mentioned. Presented examples have also allowed to signal a wider problem worth research - the influence of spatial conditioning on the form and content of early cartographic activity as a part of cultural heritage.

Zaprojektować przestrzeń? Ale jaką? Na miarę człowieka? Matematycznego ładu i harmonii opisywaną przez Platona? A może pełną chaosu i żywiołu? Jak daleka jest droga przestrzeni miejskich złożonych z ogrodzonych zespołów mieszkaniowych i wielkich centrów handlowych do miasta zdarzenia? Do miasta oferującego swoim mieszkańcom przestrzenie społeczne wywodzące się z zapisu ruchu, głosów, przestrzenie powstałe ze zdarzenia zmieniającego "pustkę" w element dialogu?

To design a space? But how? By human's extent? By mathematical order and harmony described by Plato? Or maybe by fullness of chaos and element? How far is it from urban spaces composed of compounded housing estates and huge shopping malls to the city experience? How far to the city offering it's inhabitants community spaces coming from motion records, voices, spaces created of an occurrence changing "emptiness" in to a dialog element?
