Supplier selection and evaluation are among the most critical issues in supply chain management, affecting companies’ performance because of the important role of suppliers in the chain’s profitability. For this reason, it is important for companies to have an objective methodology to evaluate and choose an appropriate supplier based on convenient criteria in a competitive market. Determination of a convenient supplier selection is a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem. In the literature, several applications of the MCDM methods for supplier evaluation and selection can be found; however, research studies in the clothing industry are still limited. Indeed, apparel supply chain managers have to consider their supplier-related decisions to reduce risks affecting the company’s performance. This study aims to fill this gap by providing apparel manufacturers with different hybrid models for selecting the best supplier. According to a literature review and questionnaire conducted, the main criteria related to supplier selection were identified and determined. Then, the analytic hierarchy process method was performed to determine the criteria’s weights, and then suppliers were ranked using hybrid multicriteria decision-making models (AHP-TOPSIS, AHP-WSM, and AHP-WPM) to select the suitable one in the apparel chain. This research methodology can be considered useful for apparel companies and other industries.

Effective strategic purchasing and supplier selection in companies provides businesses with leverage in acquiring goods and services. Thus, companies are in a better position to negotiate prices, discounts, delivery times and logistic channels. Also, strategic purchasing allows for performing a risk assessment to ensure the company’s profitability. This research aimed to identify the key currently deliberated by SMEs for supplier selection, considering such purchasing strategies as (1) cost reduction, (2) risk management, (3) global sourcing, (4) total quality management, (5) sustainable management and (6) supplier management. Also, it aimed to identify the emerging issues related to purchasing strategies. This research work performed a content analysis following a literature review. The Scopus indexation database was selected to conduct the document search. After the refinement process, based on 59 analysed documents, bibliometric assessment tools were applied to identify the key criteria for supplier selection. The TOP6 highest ranked criteria, which corresponds to 80 % of the most referred criteria, include: (1) the quality of goods; (2) compliance with the delivery times; (3) price/cost; (4) supplier reputation and/or market positioning; (5) geographical location; and (6) supplier performance history. The goal of strategic purchasing is to support the companies in achieving long-term goals through its integration into the company’s strategic planning process. It should be identified by the managers as an important resource. Several factors elevate the importance of strategic purchasing, namely, environmental protection, technology advances related to logistics 4.0, and risk assessment related to global sourcing and sustainability. The present research is in line with the findings of the referred literature, i.e., the application of prioritised criteria for the procurement and supplier selection operations in the industrial context, aiming to reduce lead times and logistic costs. The criteria must be aligned with the purchasing strategies adopted by the companies. The manuscript aims to demonstrate that the fundamentals of strategic purchasing strategies can contribute to the improvement of the SME supply process with the application of simple and cost-effective approaches.

The ready-to-wear sector is one of the areas where outsourcing is used extensively due to reasons such as being a labour-intensive sector, having a wide range of products, and the time pressure caused by the very short shelf life of the product. Therefore, garment companies work with a large number of subcontractors, which raises the problem as to which subcontractor/subcontractors work will be distributed to as well as how much to each subcontractor. Using multi-criteria decision-making methods in solving this complex problem helps decision-makers make the right decisions. From this point of view, multi-criteria decision-making methods are very important decision-making tools in terms of the optimal distribution of work to subcontractors. Within the scope of the study, the TOPSIS and AHP methods were used to distribute orders to subcontractors and compared.

Sektor odzieżowy jest jednym z obszarów, w których szeroko stosowany jest outsourcing, głównie z takich powodów, jak: pracochłonność sektora, szeroka gama produktów oraz presja czasowa spowodowana bardzo krótkim okresem trwałości produktu. Dlatego firmy odzieżowe współpracują z dużą liczbą podwykonawców, co rodzi problem, do jakiego podwykonawcy/podwykonawców zostanie przydzielona praca, a także do jakiej kwoty zostanie przydzielona każdemu z podwykonawców. W podejmowaniu właściwych decyzji w kwestii tego złożonego problemu pomaga decydentom możliwość korzystania z wielokryterialnych metod podejmowania decyzji. Z tego punktu widzenia wielokryterialne metody podejmowania decyzji są bardzo ważnymi narzędziami decyzyjnymi z punktu widzenia optymalnego podziału pracy na podwykonawców. W ramach badania wykorzystano metody TOPSIS i AHP do dystrybucji zamówień do podwykonawców i porównano je.

In this paper, we investigate the multiple attribute decision making problems based on the Bonferroni mean operators with dual Pythagorean hesitant fuzzy information. Firstly, we introduce the concept and basic operations of the dual hesitant Pythagorean fuzzy sets, which is a new extension of Pythagorean fuzzy sets. Then, motivated by the idea of Bonferroni mean operators, we have developed some Bonferroni mean aggregation operators for aggregating dual hesitant Pythagorean fuzzy information. The prominent characteristic of these proposed operators are studied. Then, we have utilized these operators to develop some approaches to solve the dual hesitant Pythagorean fuzzy multiple attribute decision making problems. Finally, a practical example for supplier selection in supply chain management is given to verify the developed approach and to demonstrate its practicality and effectiveness.

Zagadnienie oceny i wyboru dostawcy jest podstawowym problemem w obszarze logistyki. Dotyczy ono nie tylko dostawców dóbr materialnych ale także usług, w tym usług logistycznych. Dokonywana ocena i wybór mają charakter wielokryterialny, wynikający z konieczności uwzględnienia w prowadzonych analizach szeregu kryteriów ilościowych i jakościowych. W literaturze proponowanych jest wiele parametrów, które mogą okazać się ważne przy współpracy z usługodawcą logistycznym. Stąd celem artykułu jest dyskusja nad istotnością kryteriów wyboru dostawcy w przypadku tych podmiotów oraz przeprowadzenie wstępnych badań w tym obszarze, z uwzględnieniem wybranego usługodawcy logistycznego i jego klientów.

The issue of evaluation and selection of suppliers is a major problem in the area of logistics. It concerns not only the suppliers of material goods but also service providers, including logistics services. The assessment evaluation and selection is a multi-criteria resulting from the need to take into account in the analyzes carried out a number of quantitative and qualitative criteria. Literature suggests a number of parameters, which may be important in cooperation with logistics service provider. Hence the aim of this article is to discuss the significance of the criteria for selecting suppliers for these companies and conduct preliminary research in this area, taking into account the logistics service provider and its customers.

Supplier selection plays a vital role in evolving an effective supply chain and the overall performance of organisations. Choosing suppliers may involve different levels arranged in a hierarchical structure. Decisions are made successively starting from the first level to the last level. Decision variables are partitioned between different levels and are called controlling factors. In the paper, we propose a multilevel supplier selection problem with uncertain or fuzzy demand and supply. Since objectives may be conflicting in nature, possible relaxations in the form of tolerances are provided by the upper level decision makers to avoid decision deadlocks. We use (linear) membership functions to fuzzily describe objective functions, as well as the controlling factors, and generate satisfactory solutions. We extend and present an approach to solving multilevel decision making problems when fuzzy constraints are employed. Different scenarios are constructed within a numerical illustration, based on the selection of controlling factors by the upper level decision makers.

Green issues are a popular topic in today’s business life, and it is possible to see green products or advertisements in many different places due to the demand for a healthier lifestyle. Companies that are willing to be a part of the green concept should integrate this philosophy in all departments. As a result, the procurement might be seen a crucial part of this integration. However, in the emerging markets, green issues might be pushed into the background due to the competitive environment. In this study, we investigated green and other parameters in the supplier selection decision in textile industry. A decision criteria list was created and evaluated by 28 experts using the fuzzy analytic hierarchy process. The results showed that green issues have an influence on the decision environment; however, classical parameters, such as cost, delivery reliability, quality, service, and strategic alliance still carry more priority compared to green criteria consisting of environmental management, green products, and pollution control.

Zagadnienia ekologiczne są bardzo istotne przy współczesnej produkcji. Wytwórcy, którzy chcą brać udział w wytwarzaniu i kształtowaniu ekologicznych zasad muszą brać pod uwagę wszystkie aspekty procesu wytwórczego. W tym opracowaniu badano ekologiczne aspekty wyboru dostawców biorąc pod uwagę również koszty dostawy produktów, warunki dostawy, jakość, system obsługi oraz uwarunkowania strategiczne.

This paper presents an integrated evaluation approach for decision support enabling effective supplier selection and ordering processes in textile industry. The integrated evaluation method in this study includes two phases that consist of fuzzy AHP and goal programming approaches. Supplier evaluation and selection is a multi-criterion decision problem which includes both qualitative and quantitative factors. That’s why; firstly, linguistic variables expressed in trapezoidal fuzzy numbers are applied to assess weights and ratings of supplier selection criteria. Then a hierarchy multiple model based on fuzzy set theory is expressed and the geometric mean method of Buckley is used to aggregate pair wise comparisons. Finally, a goal programming model is built using the goals about coefficients of suppliers, total ordering cost, number of wrong deliveries, total delivery cost under the constraints of required minimum and maximum number of orderings and acceptable quality cost levels of each supplier and demand constraint of the product.

The mass-customization trend as flexible production philosophy has been adopted by many industries as a reaction to the fast changing customer demand environment. In relation to that mixed-model production (MMP) is a possibility for increasing flexibility, especially in the assembly department. However, many apparel companies have failed in their transition from traditional manufacturing to new, flexible manufacturing, which makes it difficult for them to be selected as suppliers who are capable of MMP. In most of the studies that have been done before, the problem of supplier selection was based on productivity and cost as the main selection criteria. As an alternative solution this research presents a new group of criteria for supplier selection with respect to the goal of MMP. The methodology of combining the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) with the support of the commercial software package Expert Choice and cluster analysis (CA) is proposed in this study. The results obtained present a new group of criteria, ranked by their importance, that the supplier needs to fulfil in order to be selected for MMP. Furthermore the large number of available suppliers was grouped into four clusters based on their similar characteristics by using CA. Finally the most acceptable cluster for MMP was selected using AHP. The methodology presented in this study can support the apparel industry in better decision making in the process of selecting the best group of suppliers for mixed-model production.

W wielu przemysłach wprowadzono system zindywidualizowanej produkcji masowej jako reakcję na szybko zmieniające się wymagania konsumentów. Dotychczas selekcja dostawców oparta była na produktywności i analizie kosztów. Ten artykuł prezentuje alternatywne rozwiązanie z wyborem nowej grupy kryteriów. Przedstawiono metodologię połączenia metody hierarchicznej analizy z pakietem Expert Choice i analizą klastrów. W proponowanej metodzie dostawcy zostali podzieleni na cztery klastry na podstawie podobieństwa charakterystyk. W efekcie najbardziej akceptowalny klaster zostaje wybrany przy zastosowaniu metody hierarchicznej analizy. Metoda ta może wspomóc prawidłowe funkcjonowanie przemysłu odzieżowego.

Przemysł maszynowy charakteryzuje się bardzo szeroką grupą dostawców pochodzących z różnych branż, stąd problem oceny dostawcy, jego wybór ma istotny wkład w końcowy efekt realizacji przyjętego zamówienia. W artykule przedstawiono strukturę systemu wyboru dostawcy z wykorzystaniem metody wnioskowania na bazie przypadków oraz systemu ekspertowego. Implementacja zaproponowanego systemu może wspierać działania konstruktorów, inżynierów, pracowników działu zakupów, pracowników przygo-towujących oferty dla klientów.

Istotą logistycznych decyzji w sferze zaopatrzenia jest ustalenie miejsca oraz wielkości i terminów zakupów materiałów. Wybór właściwych dostawców jest jednym z najbardziej istotnych zagadnień z zakresu logistyki zaopatrzenia, ukierunkowanej na optymalizację gospodarki materiałowej. Podstawowym kryterium wyboru dostawców powinno być dążenie do minimalizacji wszystkich kosztów związanych z zaopatrzeniem i utrzymaniem zapasów, a także zagwarantowaniem niezakłóconego przebiegu produkcji, przy zachowaniu optymalnego poziomu jakości oferowanych produktów. Stosuje się to różnorodne kryteria odnoszące się zarówno do przedmiotu zamówienia (np. jakość, cena), jak i właściwości dostawcy (np. pozycja finansowa, referencje wśród innych odbiorców). Ocena za pomocą tych kryteriów wymaga dostępu do obiektywnych danych, co często jest utrudnione, a często jest dokonywana na podstawie mało wiarygodnych informacji uzyskanych od dostawców. Przedsięwzięcia budowlane, ze względu na swoją specyfikę (m.in. zmienność zakresu robót, lokalizacji, niepowtarzalność przedmiotu zamówienia, dyskretny czas realizacji) wymagają stosowania sprawnych procedur doboru dostawców. W artykule przedstawiono przegląd stosowanych metod w tym zakresie, uzupełniony przykładem wyboru dostawcy z zastosowaniem rozmytego rozszerzenia metody AHP, w warunkach braku możliwości stosowania precyzyjnych ocen.

The core of supply logistic decisions is defining the location, quantity and time of purchase. Selecting appropriate suppliers is one of the key problems in supply logistics aimed at material management optimization. The main aim is minimizing total costs of creating and keeping inventory and, at the same time, assuring a continuous production of required quality. While deciding on suppliers, a variety of criteria are taken into account. The criteria may refer to the offer (price, quality) or the supplier (financial standing, reputation). The assessment should be based on objective input, but in practice rests upon opinions and information generated by the assessed suppliers themselves. Peculiarities of construction projects (as variability, local character, unrepeatability of the product, defined timespan) call for efficient and quick supplier choosing procedures. The paper reviews the methods of construction supplier selection presented in the literature and presents a case study of a supplier selection based on fuzzy AHP with imprecise evaluation data.

W artykule przedstawiono kompleksowość procesu wyboru dostawców w oparciu o różne kryteria. Ukazano możliwość dopasowania tego procesu do wymagań łańcucha dostaw. Przedstawiono model efektywnego wyboru dostawcę w oparciu o istniejącą bazę. Składa się on z dwóch etapów. Pierwszy etap to analiza obecnych dostawców współpracujących z przedsiębiorstwem produkcyjnym. Natomiast drugi etap to dopasowanie istniejącej bazy dostawców do odzwierciedlających wymagań klientów.

In the article presents model of efficient supplier selection on the current base. It consists of two stages. The first step is the analysis of current suppliers working with production company. In construction projects, availability of required material at right time at the project site is crucial to complete the project on time and within the budget. The construction project could be delayed for several reasons and this may disrupt supplies. In this work we assume that enough supply may not be available on time if the project delayed excessively unless the project manager has special supply contracts with the suppliers. Usually suppliers react in two ways towards change in delivery dates; either they may increase the price or provide a limited quantity on the negotiated price. In this work we discuss both the cases and provide solution approaches. The efficiency of the approaches is verified using randomly generated data sets.

In today's world where intensive competition exists between enterprises, it is of great importance to work in cooperation with the right suppliers. Selection of the right suppliers is a significant factor in the success of enterprises. In the selection of the best supplier (s), the strengths and weaknesses of potential suppliers should be taken into consideration. Many qualitative and quantitative criteria are included in this selection process as well as the decision-maker. One of the issues that leaves the decision maker in a difficult position is selecting the most appropriate one from the alternatives available, as traditional methods may not produce a realistic solution in this process. However, multicriteria decision making methods facilitate the process of finding a solution and enable decision makers to reach the right decisions. In this study, the fuzzy TOPSIS method, which is one of the multi-criteria decision making methods, is used in this problem area to select the most appropriate supplier of garment 'X' operating in Turkey. It is detected through analyses conducted in line with the results obtained. The ranking of the three supplier firms determined by firm X are as follows in terms of closeness index values: supplier 1, supplier 3 and supplier 2.

Dla uzyskania powodzenia w prowadzeniu przedsiębiorstw bardzo ważna jest współpraca z odpowiednimi dostawcami. Decyduje o tym szereg kryteriów, które powinny być wzięte pod uwagę. Wybór oparty na tradycyjnych metodach analizy może być trudny i zawodny, dletego też zaproponowano nową multikryterialną metodę doboru opartą na analizie zbiorów rozmytych. Analizę porównawczą przeprowadzono porównując trzech zróżnicowanych dostawców.

In today´s competitive global markets, selection of a potential supplier plays an important role to cut production costs as well as material costs of the company. This leads to successful survival and sustainability in a competitive marketplace. Therefore, evaluation and selection of an appropriate supplier has become an important part of supply chain management. The nature of the supplier selection process is a complex multi-attribute group decision making (MAGDM) problem which deals with both quantitative and qualitative factors may be conflicting in nature as well as contain incomplete and uncertain information. In order to solve such a kind of MAGDM problems, the development of an effective supplier selection model is evidently desirable. In this paper, an application of the VIKOR method combined with fuzzy logic has been used to solve supplier selection problems with conflicting and non-commensurable (different units) criteria, assuming that compromising is acceptable for conflict resolution. The decision maker wants a solution, which must be closest to the ideal, and the alternatives are evaluated according to all established criteria. Linguistic values are used to assess the ratings and weights for the conflicting factors. These linguistic ratings can be expressed in triangular fuzzy numbers. Then, a hierarchy MAGDM model based on fuzzy sets theory and the VIKOR method has been proposed to deal with the supplier selection problems in the supply chain system. A case study has been illustrated as an application of the proposed model.
