Idea miast-ogrodów była próbą poszukiwania nowych rozwiązań w rozwoju miast przełomu XIX i XX wieku. Dzisiaj, po wielu latach nadal poszukujemy nowych idei, które mogłyby pomóc w rozwiązaniu bieżących problemów współczesnych miast, w tym między innymi procesu rozpraszania metropolii. Model miasta-ogrodu w dalszym ciągu prezentuje pewne wartości uniwersalne i nie stracił na swojej aktualności. To jest powodem, dla którego obecnie stajemy przed pytaniem: czy w dzisiejszym pojmowaniu idei miasta-ogrodu można doszukiwać się wzorców dla współczesnych rozwiązań urbanistycznych?

The idea of garden cities was an attempt at searching for new solutions of development of cities at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, after many years, we still look for new ideas which could help to solve current problems of contemporary cities, including that one: how to stop the process of chaotic dispersing of metropolises. The model of a garden city still presents some universal values and has not lost its topicality. This is the reason why now we are facing the question: could we look for contemporary town planning solutions in today's comprehension of the concept of garden cities?

Open rural space is valued by many urban dwellers for recreation and quality of life reasons. However, when suburban development expands into the countryside, the traditional patterns of shaping the landscape are usually changed in an irreversible way. Despite the statements of sustainability and respect to the cultural heritage, in the researched villages neighbouring Wrocław from its southern side - the first stage of development is usually connected with: - extention of great homogenous service and industrial areas (situated along the main roads, as close as possible to the city borders) - spread of homogenous residential areas (situated almost everywhere, but concerning the communication availability and the distance from the city). The new buildings are mostly out of scale and character with traditional forms of the farmsteads. The planners, architects and owners do not respect the existing density, roof-scapes, materials, details, spaces between buildings and other natural or cultural features, that contributed to the character of the surrounding rural areas.
