Subontology of communication in the automation of negotiating processes in maritime navigation

The lack of proper communication between navigators is one of the many causes of dangerous situations in maritime transport. Automation of communication processes, in particular negotiation processes, can help either avoid such situations or, when they do occur, deal with them more promptly and effectively. We have characterized inference processes in maritime communication and the communication subontology used to describe these processes. The negotiating processes involving two or more parties are considered. An example is given of an encounter by three ships that requires communication (including negotiations) between the three navigators. We also present how the described communication processes can be automated using the developed subontology of communication.

W artykule przedstawiono wybrane zagadnienia ontologii informacji i jej zastosowanie do opisu komunikacji między uczestnikami procesu transportowego: kierującymi statkami. Scharakteryzowano procesy komunikacji: wymiany informacji oraz negocjacji - kooperacji i rywalizacji – i wykorzystaną do ich opisu subontologię komunikacji. Zaproponowano jej rozwinięcie co ma istotne znaczenie dla dalszej automatyzacji procesów komunikacji na morzu. To z kolei przyczyni się do ograniczenia błędów człowieka w tym zakresie i podniesienia poziomu bezpieczeństwa w transporcie morskim.

This article presents selected issues of information ontology and its application to the description of communication between transport process participants: navigators conducting ships. The authors characterize communication processes such as information exchange and negotiations – cooperation and competition – and the subontology for communication used for their description. An extension of the mentioned subontology is proposed, as it is essential for further automation of communication processes at sea, which will help to reduce human errors and enhance the safety in maritime transport.
