Improving the quality of public space in the built environment on the example of the village of Zolynia

The article focuses attention on a new role of public space, searching for new ways of its creation in the space of the built environment on the example of a town with significant historical and recreational values that is Zolynia. A rich array of research methods were used, from the analysis of the literature on the subject, model examples of implementation of the principles of sustainable development, formal and legal documents, through field visions, case studies, up to own analytical work and research by design using a critical analysis of local conditions and current trends in the shaping of space. The research was carried out based on the didactic process and illustrated with projects made by students. The assumed research effect is the identification of new practical solutions, the creation of a new way of thinking about the development and shaping of public spaces, the activation of processes of sustainable development of resources and local areass.

W artykule skupiono uwagę na nowej roli przestrzeni publicznej, poszukiwaniu nowych dróg jej kreacji w przestrzeni środowiska zbudowanego na przykładzie miejscowości o istotnych walorach historycznych i rekreacyjnych, jaką jest Żołynia. Wykorzystano bogatą gamę metod badawczych, od analiz literatury przedmiotu, modelowych przykładów implementacji zasad zrównoważonego rozwoju, dokumentów formalnoprawnych, przez wizje terenowe, studia przypadku, aż po własne prace analityczne i badania przez projektowanie z zastosowaniem krytycznej analizy lokalnych uwarunkowań i aktualnych tendencji w kształtowaniu przestrzeni. Badania przeprowadzono w ramach procesu dydaktycznego i zilustrowano projektami wykonanymi przez studentów. Założony efekt badawczy to wskazanie nowych rozwiązań praktycznych, kreowanie nowego sposobu myślenia o rozwoju i kształtowaniu przestrzeni publicznych, aktywizacja procesów zrównoważonego zagospodarowania zasobów i terenów lokalnych.

The article describes a student capstone design project completed by a team of five students and implemented by a resort and casino in Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA). This project was completed within the framework of project-based learning (PBL). Students had the opportunity to apply the knowledge that they learned in the classroom in a real-world application. Students also had the opportunity to work as a team which was supervised by the faculty. The outcome of the project provided valuable experience in creating of grid, a reliable source of energy. The heat generated as a by-product was used for the purpose of heating hot water and a swimming pool as well as space heating for the hotel and casino during the winter. In the summertime the excessive amount of heat was used to dehumidify the air in the hotel and casino. Dehumidifying the air increased the level of comfort in the hotel and casino as well as in the enclosed swimming pools area. The article is focusing on the cost effectiveness of the off-grid heat-and-power solution. The net present value and internal rate of return as well as the payback time were calculated.
