The history of the experimental studies of the whip cracking phenomenon as reconstructed by Goriely and McMillen is briefly described. Technical details and results of the recent experiments performed by Peter Krehl et al. are presented. The discrete model of the whip and its equations of motion are formulated. Algorithms of its numerical integration are discussed. Results of a few numerical experiments in which the end of the whip is shown to reach supersonic velocity are presented and analysed.
