Balance of the built environment in structural terms

The subject of this work is an in-depth analysis of the structure of the built environment as a system of organised relations. Three elementary aspects expressed in binary oppositions were distinguished: interior - exterior (formal aspect), individual - collective (social aspect), variable - permanent (dynamic aspect). These aspects reflect the diverse psychophysical needs and existential states of a human being. The reorganisation of a habitat is a change in the internal relationships of these categories in a specific region and spatial scale. A healthy environment can be defined as one that balances polar categories at each level of the analysis. Reforms and re-evaluations in the built environment can be interpreted as attempts to restore balance, as illustrated with examples from the history of architecture and urban planning. The results of the work contribute to the general theory of the built environment, essential for the proper design process in a wide spectrum of spatial scale.

Przedmiotem pracy jest pogłębiona analiza struktury środowiska zbudowanego jako system zorganizowanych relacji. Wyodrębniono trzy elementarne aspekty wyrażone w opozycjach binarnych: wnętrze - zewnętrze (aspekt formalny), indywidualne - kolektywne (aspekt społeczny), trwałość - zmienność (aspekt dynamiczny). Aspekty te odzwierciedlają zróżnicowane potrzeby psychofizyczne oraz stany egzystencjalne człowieka. Reorganizacja habitatu jest zmianą wewnętrznych relacji ww. kategorii w określonym regionie i skali przestrzennej. Zdrowe środowisko można określić jako takie, które równoważy biegunowe kategorie na każdym poziomie analizy. Reformy, a także przewartościowania w środowisku zbudowanym są próbami przywrócenia jego równowagi, co zilustrowano przykładami z historii architektury oraz urbanistyki. Wyniki pracy stanowią przyczynek do ogólnej teorii habitatu i prawidłowego procesu projektowego w szerokim spektrum skali przestrzennej.

With the analysis of the industrial economic theory structure – conduct – performance model, the study investigates the existence of significant relationship among market structure, conduct and performance. Twelve Taiwan companies are studied during the study period from 2006 to 2012 which are analysed with fixed effect and random effect of panel data and ordinary least squares estimation. The empirical result backs the statement by “Structuralism” that market structure (market share, entry barrier and capital intensity) directly affects firm conduct (R&D intensity) and performance (ROA).

Strukturalizm zatarł granice pomiędzy urbanistyką, a architekturą, konstrukcją, a detalem. W obiekcie architektonicznym, niczym w maszynie, każdy pojedynczy detal miał swą określoną funkcję i jasno sprecyzowaną wymowę w kontekście całości. Przykładem realizacji tych zasad jest Instytut Fizyki w Lodzi, którego forma stanowi obraz kształtowania się późno modernistycznych idei, ich degradacji i współczesnego niezrozumienia.

Structuralism has blurred distinctions between urbanism and architecture, construction and detail. In the architectural object, as in the machine, any particular detail had its function and precised meaning within the wholeness. The Physics Institute in Lodz appears to be an example of realization of these principles. Its structure is an image of late modernistic ideas, their decay and contemporary incomprehension.

Praca poddaje analizie złożony proces wyłaniania się pewnej szczególnej perspektywy, w której archaiczne społeczności mitopoetyckie konceptualizowały zarówno rzeczywistość, jak i swoje osadzenie w niej. Owa wyobrażeniowa perspektywa postrzegania bytu, posiada swoje źródło i jednocześnie - pierwotny zinternalizowany wzorzec - wzorzec przestrzeni symbolicznej. W pracy opisano przebieg zmiany struktury, pierwotnie linearnej figuracji wyobrażeń zawartych w górnopaleolitycznym malarstwie naskalnym i związanej z nim koncepcji "przestrzeni wędrówki". Przedstawiono jednocześnie podstawowe archetypy kształtu - okręgu i czworokąta, związane z odzwierciedlonymi w przestrzeni granicami o charakterze linearnym. Metodą badawczą zastosowaną w niniejszej pracy jest metoda strukturalistyczna, odnosząca się do dokonań z zakresu zorientowanej w takiej perspektywie antropologii kultury, zawartych w dziełach autorstwa wymienionych już: André Leroi-Gourhana, Władimira Toporowa oraz: Jana Kordysa, Edmunda Leacha i Claude Lévi-Straussa. W pracy odwołano się również do badań z dziedziny religioznawstwa, socjologii religii, teorii architektury oraz intuicji poznawczych ich autorów - Stefana Czarnowskiego, Jana Assmanna, Mircea Eliadego, Siegfrieda Giediona, Erika Hornunga, a także innych autorów wymienionych w tekście. Niniejsza publikacja została napisana w oparciu o rozprawę doktorską autora. Celem prezentowanej analizy jest przedstawienie fragmentu poglądów autora dotyczących źródeł ludzkiego postrzegania przestrzeni, którego ekstensje wydają się - jego zdaniem - sięgać współczesności.

This work undertakes to analyse a complex process of the formation of a particular perspective in which, archaic mythpoetic communities conceptualized, both the reality as well as their rooting in it. That imaginable perspective of the perception of existence, possesses its source, and simultaneously - primeval internalized pattern in the pattern of symbolic space. The work describes the course of structural changes of, originally linear figuration of images present in upper palaeolithic cavern painting, and of - "space of wander" conception related to it. Concurrently, basic archetypes of shape - circle and quadrangle of upper palaeolithic era, related to borders reflected in space of linear character, were introduced. The method applied in the presented work is structuralistic, and related to achievements of cultural anthropology from such a perspective, which is exhibited by works of already mentioned authors: André Leroi-Gourhan, Vladimir Toporow, as well as: Jan Kordys, Edmund Leach and Claude Lévi-Strauss. Author has also referred to investigations from the field of studies of religions, sociology of religion, theory of architecture, and also, cognitive intuitions of their authors: Stefan Czarnowski, Jan Assmann, Mircea Eliade, Siegfried Giedion, Erik Hornung and others, quoted in the text. The presented publication has been written on the basis of author"s doctoral dissertation. The aim of the analysis is to portray a fragment of author"s opinions, concerning primeval sources of human perception of space, whose extensions, in his view, seem to be continued into the present day.
