This study provides empirical indicators on the presence of alarming mental stress levels among healthcare staffs as a result of the work environment. The study uses a comprehensive survey to identify work stressors and to addresses stress symptoms and coping behaviours among the healthcare givers in Jordan as a case study. The study aims to direct management’s attention to work conditions that largely contribute to increasing mental stresses among their healthcare staffs. Moreover, the study identifies out stress symptoms that employees, team leaders and managers should not ignore to help their fellow workers cope with their stresses through legitimate coping behaviours. A total of 300 responses from 176 nurses, 45 technicians and 79 physicians from three hospitals with high patient flows were included in the statistical analyses. Results demonstrate that stressors related to high job demands, especially long working hours, have the highest impact on the development of stress among surveyed caregivers. Job-demand stressors were the most significant predictor of the symptom recurrence level with a β = 0.334. Continual tiredness and frequent headaches were the most frequent stress symptoms. Taking unprescribed medications, smoking tobacco, and faking reasons to take time off were the most common behaviours to relieve stress. This study contributes to the literature theoretically and practically. From a theoretical perspective, the study provides a comprehensive survey that captures the symptoms, relieve behaviours and work-related causes of stress. From the practical perspective, the study helps care providers and healthcare managers address and resolve work stressors and help their staff adopt healthy behaviours to relieve their stresses.

Various automated/semi-automated medical diagnosis systems based on human physiology have been gaining enormous popularity and importance in recent years. Physiological features exhibit several unique characteristics that contribute to reliability, accuracy and robustness of systems. There has also been significant research focusing on detection of conventional positive and negative emotions after presenting laboratory-based stimuli to participants. This paper presents a comprehensive survey on the following facets of mental stress detection systems: physiological data collection, role of machine learning in Emotion Detection systems and Stress Detection systems, various evaluation measures, challenges and applications. An overview of popular feature selection methods is also presented. An important contribution is the exploration of links between biological features of humans with their emotions and mental stress. The numerous research gaps in this field are highlighted which shall pave path for future research.

Omówiono szereg zasad takiego planu. Przedstawiono różne charakterystyki stresu, jak stres i stresor. Przedstawiono modele stresu. Omówiono mechanizm powstawania stresu. Podano strukturę interwencyjnego zarządzania stresem. Wprowadzono pojęcie intensywności stresu. Rozważono model stresu w działaniu, wprowadzając pojęcie stresu czasowego. Sformułowano wnioski.

This work has been devoted to impact of stress on man-environment relation, particularly on arrangement and relation man-machine. Factors generating stress have been considered. Possibility of minimization of stress affection on humans have been pointed out in the work. A number of principles how to deal with stress situations are shown. It is pointed out how important it is to project work. Various characteristics of stress like stress and stressor are presented. Phases of human's organism adaptation under stress condition are shown. Models of stress have been presented. A mechanism how stress arises has been considered. An interventional structure of stress management has been given. A notion of stress intensity has been introduced. A model of stress in action introducing the idea of a time stress was considered. Combat operations, even conducting tasks in peace missions is always connected with the threat of losing life or health. Death and injuries, and in the defence need, the necessity to kill are one of the basic combat determinants. In spite of this, soldiers’ psychological preparation to these extraordinary, in peacetime, events is seldom included into soldier’s training process. The article attempts to approximate this preparation general principles in a study published by the Centre of Bundeswehre Inner Command. The authors, relating to this publication, discuss the tasks and contents of the activity of this kind in the German army. They include such issues as: psychological conditions of soldiers’ behaviour in extreme situations, their possible mental reactions and superior’s behaviour informing about death.
