Wyrażona w tytule tomu współzależność: transport a logika formy urbanistycznej zachęciła autora artykułu do zarysowania syntezy, której "głównym bohaterem" jest miasto nowoczesne. Przeciwstawiona innym formułom doktrynalnym jak np. socrealizm a także współczesnym eksperymentom Nowej Urbanistyki, struktura przestrzenna miasta z czasów modernizmu jest nadal wdzięcznym przedmiotem badań nad teoretycznymi podejściami do problemu budowania formy urbanistycznej w kontekście funkcji transportowych. Osią kompozycyjną tekstu jest pytanie o rolę ulicy w przestrzennej strukturze miasta a zwłaszcza kwestia dualizmu: ulica jako element świadomie komponowanej przestrzeni urbanistycznej i jednocześnie jako czynnik strukturotwórczy zmieniający strukturę miejską odpowiednio do ewolucji i rewolucji w systemach transportowych. Geometria układu ulicznego traktowana jest tutaj jako jedno z głównych kryteriów typologii przestrzennych form miasta. W artykule opisano sześć takich typów ("szachownica", "ogród", "linia", "węzeł", "korytarz", "sieć"). Przegląd zamykają pytania o szanse skutecznego przeciwdziałania negatywnym skutkom "rozlewania się miast" i wyjścia z pułapki - z "ideowej próżni" - w jakiej znalazła się dzisiejsza urbanistyka.

Encouraged by the title of this volume: transport and the logic of urban form, the author of this paper outlines the synthesis having The City of Modern Movement as the main hero. Contrasted with other doctrinal formulations such as "social realism" and contemporary experiments of New Urbanism, still The City of Modern Movement is suitable a subject for studying theoretical approaches to the problem of principles governing the formation of urban spatial structure in the context of transport functions. Compositional axis of the paper is the question about the role of the street in urban spatial structure and - in particular - the dualism: street as the element of consciously composed urban space versus the structure formation/form generative factor changing the city structure respectively to the evolution and revolution in transport system. The geometry of street pattern is regarded here as the main criterion in the typology of urban form. In the paper six types of form are discussed (chessboard, "garden", line, knot, corridor, net). The review is concluded by questions about the chances of effective counteraction to negative impact of urban sprawl and how to come out of "ideological vacuum" in which today urbanism is trapped.
