Purpose: Among the strategic potentials of a firm affecting both market and economic outcomes achievement by the firm, as well as gaining and maintaining a long-term competitive advantage by a firm, the key importance is assigned to the firm competences. The aim of the article is to identify the premises as well as the criteria and cross-sections of the classification of firm competences. Design/methodology/approach: The article indicates the key criteria and types of the firm competences within strategic management. An extensive literature review and an identification approach were used. Findings: Competences should be classified using different criteria. Individual competences may significantly affect the achievement of the expected market and economic outcomes, as well as building a long-term competitive advantage of a firm. Practical implications: The research outcomes presented in the article show the importance of the different types of the firm competences in strategic management. Originality/value: The most important criteria of the classification of the firm competences in the area of strategic management were presented. The article is addressed both to researchers as well as managers and other business practitioners.

Purpose: The aim of the article is to identify the premises of the evolution and development of firm competences in strategic management. W artykule omówiono siły kształtujące konkurencję, potencjał strategiczny oraz przewagę konkurencyjną w branży TSL. Przedstawiono wstępną koncepcję budowy modelu biznesowego ukierunkowanego na konkurencyjność i efektywność przedsiębiorstwa logistycznego.

Under market conditions, the successful performance of an enterprise depends on many factors including size, technology, staff, management system, quality, etc. One of the most important parameters is the ability to determine the strategic potential of a company. This may be achieved by accomplishing three tasks: first, the capabilities of the company's management subsystem should be determined, second, production subsystem's capabilities should be defined, and, third, they should be appropriately integrated. When the values and weights of the particular elements of the strategic potential matrix are determined on the basis of experts' evaluation, they may be combined into an integrated index. This may be determined by using well-known multiple attribute decision support systems.

Zarządzanie potencjalem strategicznym przedsiębiorstwa bez wątpienia staje się już domeną przedsiębiorstw i innych jednostek organizacyjnych działających w warunkach rosnącej konkurencyjności. Przemawia za tym fakt, że racjonalnych zmian i usprawnień nie powinno się wprowadzać, jeżeli wcześniej nie zostały przeprowadzone kompleksowe i komplementarne badania własnego stanu przedsiębiorstwa. Wobec powyższego zasadniczym, omawianym problemem niniejszego artykułu jest potencjał strategiczny przedsiębiorstwa, W tym celu, w kolejnych rozdziałach, wyjaśniono istotę podejścia zasobowego i różne klasyfikacje zasobów, przedstawiono teoretyczne podstawy i zakres szczególowy analizy potencjału strategicznego oraz ukazano miejsce analizy przedsiębiorstwa w ogólnym procesie zarządzania strategicznego.

The paper presents a problem very important in the theory of organisation and management, which is the strategic potential of the enterprise. In the article the definition of the ..potential of the enterprise", characteristics of the nature and types of resources and own idea of this concept are presented. Furthermore the article also describes a detailed procedure of identyfication of the company's potential. The fundamental premise of this article is that a very important development factor of modern organisation is systematic and complete research of the resources. Each of the enterprises should benefit from the analysis of its resources, capabilities, competences, core competences, value activities and factors which affect the strategic potential and determine the company's success.
