The impact of cleaner production strategy on Sustainable supply chain performance

There is a paradigm shift occurring in organizations towards sustainable production through cleaner production strategies. This cleaner production concept has been proven to be cost-effective, resultoriented, environment-savvy and provides the organizations a cutting edge over their counterparts. However, there is a lack of awareness about cleaner production practices in Iraq while the current study analyzed one of the most important factories in Iraq for sugar production to understand the factors required for successful application of cleaner production strategy and the challenges to be expected. In this study, the researchers followed an exploratory research approach. For this study, a questionnaire was designed, validated and distributed randomly among 700 potential respondents working in various departments of the organization under study. Out of the total responses, 482 responses were considered and SEM-PLS analysis was conducted. The cleaner production strategies were applied through nine dimensions and the relationship between the performance of the factory and sustainable supply chain was found to be prominent. With a few limitations such as the choice of a single factory, weak relationship between the variables identified from hypothesis testing, the study is a first-of-its-kind in this domain, especially in dealing with sugar refineries. Based on the outcomes, policy recommendations were made to the decision makers and the government. It can be concluded that the application of modern technologies and effective resource management can help in achieving the goal of the study.

W artykule przedstawiono korzyści ekologiczne będące wynikiem realizacji strategii Czystszej Produkcji w przedsiębiorstwie hutniczym Ferrum SA. Na podstawie raportów środowiskowych przedsiębiorstwa wykonano analizę oceny efektywności ekologicznej w okresie 1990÷2009. Ponadto przedstawiono powiązania zachodzące pomiędzy procesem restrukturyzacji naprawczej a strategią Czystszej Produkcji. Kompleksowa restrukturyzacja naprawcza, obejmująca obszary: zatrudnienia, finansów, zmian organizacyjnych, a przede wszystkim technologii wytwarzania z uwzględnieniem wymogów ochrony środowiska, stworzyła podstawy do wdrożenia strategii Czystszej Produkcji.

In the article was presented environmental effects as a result of realizing the strategy Cleaner Production in the metallurgical enterprise Ferrum SA. On the base of environmental reports the analysis of the eco-efficiency level in period 1990÷2009 was realized. Moreover relations between restructuring process in the enterprise and Cleaner Production strategy were presented. Full restructuring in areas: employment, finance, organizational structures and production technology connected with environmental protection created the base for Cleaner Production strategy.

The Cleaner Production strategy achieves the ecodevelopment goals at the company level by implementing proecological projects related to Cleaner Production programs. Such activities enable companies to get a wide variety of benefits, including the ecological ones related to a decreased nuisance of manufacturing process, economical profits leading to an improved productivity of the companies involved as well as advantages pertaining to enhanced employee's safety and working conditions. The paper deals with ecological and economical effects of CP project implementation in selected companies within the scope of Cleaner Production programs developed in Poland.
