Understanding the influence of iron impurity on the formation of the structure and the properties of hypereutectic aluminum-silicon alloys are important for achieving the required quality of castings, especially those obtained from secondary materials. In the present work, the influence of different iron contents (0.3, 1.1, and 2.0 wt.%) on the crystallization process, microstructure and mechanical properties of the Al-15% Si alloy was studied. It is shown that the presence of iron impurity in the Al-15% Si alloy leads to increasing the eutectic crystallization time from 6.2 to 7.6 s at increasing the iron content from 0.3 wt.% to 1.1 wt.%, changing the structure of the alloy eutectic in the solid state. The primary silicon and β-Al5SiFe phase coexist in the structure of the Al-15% Si alloys at a temperature below 575°C in the range of iron concentrations from 0 to 2 wt.% in equilibrium conditions. In the experimental alloys structure, the primary crystals of the β-phase were metallographically detected only in the alloys containing 1.1 and 2 wt.% of iron impurity. Increase of the iron content up to 2 wt.% significantly reduces the mechanical properties of the Al-15% Si alloy due to the formation of large platelet-like inclusions of β-Al5SiFe phase.

Shrinkage phenomena during solidification and cooling of hypereutectic aluminium-silicon alloys (AlSi18, AlSi21) have been examined. A vertical shrinkage rod casting with circular cross-section (constant or fixed: tapered) has been used as a test sample. Two type of experiments have been conducted: 1) on development of the test sample linear dimension changes (linear expansion/contraction), 2) on development of shrinkage stresses in the test sample. By the linear contraction experiments the linear dimension changes of the test sample and the metal test mould as well a temperature in six points of the test sample have been registered. By shrinkage stresses examination a shrinkage tension force and linear dimension changes of the test sample as well a temperature in three points of the test sample have been registered. Registered time dependences of the test bar and the test mould linear dimension changes have shown, that so-called pre-shrinkage extension has been mainly by mould thermal extension caused. The investigation results have shown that both: the linear contraction as well as the shrinkage stresses development are evident dependent on metal temperature in a warmest region the sample (thermal centre).

From the background about Al-Si alloys modifying from eutectic silicon morphology and mechanical properties relation point of view is at solving of chosen technological problems used structural analysis and Si morphology quantification. There were solved two concrete problems: parameters of solution annealing AlSi9Cu3 alloy and confirming of laser treatment influence on AlSi7Mg0.3 alloy structure. In both cases have material heating caused spheroidization of eutectic silicon. Optimal regime of AlSi9Cu3 alloy (515 oC/4 hrs.) solution annealing was confirmed based on structural analysis, which have achieved fine globular silicon particles segregation and structural changes study at AlSi7Mg0,3 alloy after laser treatment showed improving of mechanical properties, proved also with metallography analysis. Modern methods of structure analysis application enable to spread present knowledge's in area of technological research.

This study presents research results of the influence that refining and transfer of AlSi12S alloy on the porosity of high pressure die-castings. Tests were conducted under production conditions of Die-casting Foundry META-ZEL Sp z o.o. The operation of refining was conducted in a melting furnace, with the use of an FDU Mini Degasser. Decay of the refining effect was assessed by evaluating the porosity content and metallographic examination.

Some design changes in device elaborated by author to examination of linear contraction and shrinkage stresses progress of metals and alloys during- and after solidification have been described. The introduced changes have been focused on design of closing of shrinkage test rod mould. The introduced changes have been allowed to simplify a mounting procedure of thermocouples measuring a temperature of the shrinkage rod casting (in 6 points). Exemplary investigation results of linear contraction and shrinkage stresses development in Al-Si13.5% alloy have been presented.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań procesów krystalizacji stopów: aluminium – (AK9, AK65, AK132), miedzi – (MO5, B555) i cynku – Z41. Przebieg procesów krystalizacji zarejestrowano w postaci zapisu graficznego krzywych termicznych t = f(τ) i przewodności elektrycznej σ = f(τ) oraz ich pierwszych pochodnych. Opracowane programy komputerowe pozwalają określić – w charakterystycznych punktach (pikach) – na krzywych krystalizacji powstające fazy tworzące strukturę odlewu. Przeprowadzona analiza wartości liczbowych – zaznaczonych kursorami – umożliwia określenie stopnia uszlachetnienia badanych stopów.

The paper presents the result of research on processes of crystallisation of alloys: aluminium – AK9, AK64, AK132; copper – MO59, B555 and zinc – Z41. The processes of crystallisation ware registered in graphical notation of thermal curves – t=f(τ) and electrical conductivity - σ = f(τ) as well as their first derivatives. Developed computer programs enable to determine – in characteristic points (peaks) of crystallisation curves – the phases building the structure of the cast. The carried out analysis of numerical values – marked with cursors – enables to determine the degree of purification of alloys.
