Celem opracowania jest przedstawienie różnorodnych form dekoracji architektonicznej gotyckich chrzcielnic kamiennych. Praca uwzględnia chrzcielnice z terenu Śląska w jego granicach z początku XVI w. [11], z pominięciem księstwa bytomskiego, i obejmuje obiekty datowane na okres od I poł. XV w. do ok. pol. XVI w. Jest to wybór z katalogu dekorowanych gotyckich chrzcielnic kamiennych na Śląsku, sporządzonego w latach 1999-2001 [5] i obejmującego 42 obiekty, których czaszę, trzon bądź stopę pokrywa dekoracja. W początkowej fazie zbierania materiału potrzebnego do przedstawienia różnorodności dekoracji architektonicznej na śląskich chrzcielnicach posłużył katalog zabytków sporządzony przez Hansa Lutscha [9]. Pewnym uzupełnieniem był również katalog średniowiecznych chrzcielnic kamiennych w Polsce autorstwa Jadwigi Kuczyńskiej [8]. Aby potwierdzić istnienie zachowanych obiektów posłużono się kartami inwentaryzatorskimi zabytków ruchomych, dostępnymi u wojewódzkich, konserwatorów zabytków. Analizę materiału poprzedzono badaniami terenowymi, polegającymi na wykonaniu inwentaryzacji fotograficznej i opisie obiektów.

Architectural details on some Silesian baptismal fonts are presented. Six groups have been distinguished. Fonts were classified according to the shape of the bowl, the stem and the foot. In the first group there are three octogonal baptismal fonts, whose bowls are roll formed. This includes fonts from Lubsza, Strzelniki and Głubczyce. Fonts from Opole, Krapkowice, Nysa and Wroclaw are in the second group. Their bowls and stems are octogonal, but the foot is square. The tracery joins the bowl with the foot. The third group includes two fonts, in Stronia and Wabienice. They are very similar to fonts from the second group, but-there is no tracery, and the bowl is separated from the stem by the nodus. The next, fourth group, consists of three fonts, in Janków, Wojtkowice and Oława. Their shape is almost the same as the shape of the chalice, even the nodus in the middle of the stem. On the bowl there are rectangle panels with low i cliefs. In the fifth group there are six fonts, from Rościstawice, Ścinawa, Maniów Wielki, Konary, and two from Wrocław. The last, sixth, group includes three fonts from: Nowa Wieś Grodziska, Zagrodno and Olszanica. Their shape is very similar to fonts from the fourth group and they were probably made by the same sculptor. The ornament of the Silesian fonts has a very differentiated and rich iconographic design. Architectural motifs are not rare. It is possible to distinguish a few groups classified according to the type of motif and its individuality. First - tracery, which appears on the bowl as a separate motif (Wojtkowice). Next - some form of tracery such as a frieze around the rim of the font (Zebrzydów). We can also find some architectural motifs in figural sculpture, where they constitute an integral part of the presentation (St. Barbara's Tower) Architectural motifs can be found on the bowl as well as on the stem and on the foot of the font.
