The paper provides an overview of the most important instruments of environmental protection dependent on spatial information. Due to public participation in the decision-making process in environmental matters, as well as the obligation to ensure common access to environmental information, the paper briefly discusses the role of geoinformation in this context. One of the issues raised is the role of spatial information in the reporting obligation towards the EU in connection with international, including Community, initiatives concerning the exchange of environmental information. Finally, the paper makes an attempt to answer the question whether and how the INSPIRE Directive may contribute to enhancement of environmental management processes and who will be the beneficiary of the shared, coordinated system of spatial information.
