In this work, a methodology to diagnose ten diesel bus engines is carried out by means of some characteristics of the starting system performance. The signals of battery voltage, electric current supplied to the starter motor and crankshaft revolutions during cold and warm engine starting processes are analysed. Characteristics and patterns of the signals that are attributable to engine compression and combustion failures are pointed out, which are related to the kilometres travelled by each vehicle after the last engine repair and the shutdown time of the engine in warm condition. It is obtained that the rise of the current required by the starter motor during the second and third compression process, and the mean crankshaft angular acceleration after the second compression process are characteristics that are related to the engine condition.

In the paper the transients under starting process and the steady states of squirrel-cage motor (IM) and line start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPMSM) have been compared. The original stator of 3 kW induction motor type Sg 100L-4B, was used in both structures. In order to determine opportunities to increase energy parameters of LSPMSM the heating curves of both motors were compared. In LSPMSM the rotor with aluminum and copper cage was used. The basic operating parameters of the two structures which are characterized by identical stators were tested. Particular attention has been given to the transient under starting process. Efficiency, power factor and current in the stator windings obtained during measurements for both structures have been presented. The paper focuses on achieving a much higher output power for LSPMSM than an induction motor of the same size. The selected results of experimental tests were shown.

W pracy opisano proces rozruchu w mikrołożysku ślizgowym polimerowym o czopie i panewce wykonanych z polimeru. Przedstawiono model kontaktu dwóch rzeczywistych powierzchni polimerowych uzyskanych przy użyciu mikroskopu sił atomowych (AFM) oraz model ścinania przy obecności siły stycznej (tarcia). Opisano program symulacyjny i przedstawiono wyniki obliczeń porównując je z wynikami badań tarcia w fazie rozruchu takich łożysk.

The process of starting phase in a journal polymer-on-polymer microbearing is described. The model of contact of two reallistic surfaces obtained using Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and the model of shearing under tangential load (friction force) is discussed. The simulation computer program is presented together with the results of computations as compared with the results of experimental studies of frictional behaviour of such bearings during starting phase (transition from standstill to sliding).
