The aim of the article is to assess the variability of the floods’ risk with the use of maximal values distribution. In the authors’ researches, the hydrometric data in the form of daily water levels from the period of years 1981-2013 will be used. The collected data come from the hydrological station in town Trestno, located in the 242.1 km of Odra River (in southern-west Poland). For the purpose of estimating the flood risk, quarterly highs from the collected data have been selected. Authors have taken the probability of exceeding the alarm states for the analyzed section of the river as a measure of the risk of appearing floods. This risk has been calculated by using the theoretical cumulative distribution of quarterly highs of the water levels. The Frechet distribution was used in the studies as well. At the same time, the article has paid significant attention to the possibility of adapting the shown solutions for the integrated flood risk management process in accordance with the current National and European legislations.

W artykule podano krótki zarys organizacji i funkcjonowania monitoringu wód podziemnych w Polsce. Omówiono strukturę organizacyjną, cel i zakres badań prowadzonych w ogólnokrajowej sieć monitoringu wód podziemnych. Podano przykłady monitoringu regionalnego dla obszaru silnie zurbanizowanego i o dominacji wpływów przyrodniczych. Zarysowano kierunki i perspektywy rozwoju monitoringu podkreślając, że jednym z głównych zadań jest zapewnienie ciągłości funkcjonowania sieci krajowej oraz monitoringu regionalnego. Stwierdzono pilną konieczność upowszechnienia informacji o działających na terenie kraju systemach monitoringowych wód podziemnych np. w postaci ogólnodostępnej bazy danych. Celowym jest aby sieć monitoringu o zasięgu krajowym prowadzona była przez jedną wyspecjalizowaną jednostkę badawczo-naukową.

Brief description of groundwater monitoring system and the frames of its func6oning was given in the following paper. System of monitoring, aim and scope of works performed in nation-wide groundwater network was discussed. Models of regional monitoring for areas higly urbanised/populated and, on the other hand, for those of predominant natural-biased characteristics, were shown. There was also given the outline of trends and prospectivity of groundwater monitoring development. It was emphasized that assertion of uninterrupted performing of nation-wide network and regional monitoring is one of the main tasks. Necessity of prevalence of information concerning the groundwater monitoring systems operating in Poland, e.g. in the form of free accessible data base was assumed. It is essential for nation-wide monitoring system to be under the management and supervision of one, specialized research-scientific unit.
