The use of biological indices for the assessment of the river quality (Ruda River, Poland)

Recognition of the deteriorating conditions of rivers worldwide has called for increased efforts to improve the ecological quality of impacted river systems. This is particularly important in areas that have suffered from a significant impact of human pressure on the ecological status of water. Field studies were conducted in the Ruda River in an area that had undergone anthropogenic disturbances. The objectives of our survey were to test the biological metrics based on benthic macroinvertebrates at four study sites. Spring and autumn surveys of benthic invertebrates indicated that based on the BMWP and BMWP(PL) indices, water quality was higher in comparison with the value of Multimetric index at all of the sites that were studied. Our results revealed that the water quality was higher at the study sites that are located above the dam reservoir based on both the chemical and biological parameters. This study also indicated that both spring and autumn constitute appropriate periods for carrying out monitoring studies. The values of multimeric index indicated the same water quality (except for site 1) in both sampling periods. Anthropogenic transformations of a riverbed influence the flora and fauna and affect the ecological status of rivers.

W artykule przeanalizowano problem zanieczyszczenia fosforem rzek w wysoko zurbanizowanej części województwa śląskiego. Stwierdzono, że pomimo znacznej rozbudowy i modernizacji komunalnych systemów oczyszczania ścieków, w ostatnim dziesięcioleciu nie nastąpiła znacząca poprawa jakości wód, a stężenie fosforu ogólnego kilkukrotnie przewyższa progowe wartości limitujące możliwość osiągnięcia dobrego stanu ekologicznego w rozumieniu Ramowej Dyrektywy Wodnej. Wysunięto hipotezę, w myśl której, osiągnięcie znaczącej poprawy jest możliwe pod warunkiem wprowadzenia systemów doczyszczania ścieków oraz wprowadzenia w poszczególnych zlewniach lokalnych rozwiązań technicznych i przestrzennych ograniczających zanieczyszczanie fosforem przez spływ powierzchniowy z terenów zurbanizowanych.

In the paper, the problem of pollution of rivers with phosphorus in highly urbanised part of the Silesia Voivodeship has been analysed. There has been stated that despite the considerable development and modernisation of the municipal sewage treatment systems, significant improvement of the water quality has not occurred in the last ten years and the total phosphorus concentration exceeds several times the threshold values that limit the possibility of achieving a good ecological state, as defined by the Framework Water Directive. There has been formulated a hypothesis according to which considerable improvement is likely to be achieved, on condition that there would be introduced the sewage additional cleaning systems as well as technical and spatial solutions in particular local drainage areas that limit the pollution with phosphorus through the surface run-off from the urbanised areas.

Przedstawiono wyniki badań stanu ekologicznego rzek z wykorzystaniem makrofi-towej metody oceny rzek. Badania potwierdziły możliwość stosowania tej metody do oceny rzek na terenie Wielkopolski. Wykazały, że procentowy udział rzek o dobrym stanie ekologicznym jest bardzo wysoki.

The article presents the results of ecological state of rivers assessment realised with the use of the macrophytes-based method. The research has confirmed the possibility to use this method to assess the state of Wielkopolska's rivers. It indicates that the percent of rivers in good ecological state is very high.

The article presents information on methods of hydromorphological rivers assessment rivers used in Poland and abroad. In Poland there still is no method that would be possible to implement and would comply with the EN 14 614 norm.

That branch of science is dealing with items of crucial importance for the future, i.e. the searching for answer to question how and to what degree it is possible to reconcile the integration of biological ecosystems of river basins with economic functions.
