The aim of this dissertation to determine the influence of frosting and effects of air cooler surface frosting of refrigeration cycles on environmental degradation. The first chapter deals with the fundamental problems of frosting and defrosting of air coolers used in cooling equipment. Examination of the properties of frost being formed on the surface of the air coolers is an important part of the work. Chapter two presents a one-dimensional mathematical model of transient heat and mass exchange during frost accumulation. Chapter three concerns on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the defrosting process in several systems used in the cooling industry. Correlations are presented between the watt-hour efficiency of defrosting and: (a) surface frost mass, (b) thermal power of the defrosting system and (c) temperature in the cold store. Air cooler defrosting systems has been classified. Flow charts are given for controlling the defrosting process of air coolers, as well as an algorithm for selecting the defrosting system depending on the operating conditions of the cooling unit. Subjects covered in chapter four include an analysis of the influence of defrosting on the thermal efficiency of the cooling unit and a cost analysis of defrosting systems used in cooling equipment. The author's inventions concerning the use of "cold" accumulated in the frost to increase the thermal efficiency of the cooling equipment are discussed in chapters three and four. The results of author's research are summarized in the last chapter.
