Body balance in people practicing snowboarding

While snowboarding, the human body is subjected to many forces and factors affecting balance. It is assumed that practising snowboarding may improve balance, but the evidence from the literature is scarce. Therefore, our study aimed to examine the effect of snowboard training on balance parameters in adults. Methods: The study included 34 subjects between 19 to 26 years old (21.4 ± 1.44) – students of the University School of Physical Education in Wrocław. They were divided into 2 equal groups. The first group, the practising group consisted of 17 snowboarders who participated in a 6-day snowboard training. The second group, the control group consisted of 17 individuals who had never practised snowboarding. For the conduct of the study, a FreeMED force plate was used. The following parameters were measured: the length of COP sways, the surface of the COP ellipse, and COP ellipse angle. Tests were performed with eyes closed and open. Results: Values of most of the parameters in the practising group decreased insignificantly after 6-day training. Values of parameters in the control group were in most cases insignificantly higher in comparison with the practising group. Conclusions: Our findings may suggest that snowboard training has no effect on balance. Further research on larger groups of participants is required. Research methodology should include electromyography, measurement of the moment of muscle force, and kinematic analysis for evaluation movement during real snowboard ride.

Popularność sportów zimowych w Polsce wciąż rośnie. Ośrodki narciarskie zlokalizowane na górskich lodowcach umożliwiają całoroczne uprawianie sportów zimowych, co nie jest możliwe w polskich kompleksach. Alternatywą mogą okazać się kryte stoki narciarskie, których jak dotąd nie ma w naszym kraju. Na świecie zrealizowanych zostało już wiele takich obiektów i wszystkie cieszą się ogromnym zainteresowaniem wśród turystów przez cały rok. Celem pracy dyplomowej było wykonanie wariantowego projektu konstrukcji krytego stoku narciarskiego, przy rozpatrzeniu dwóch koncepcji architektoniczno-budowlanych tego typu obiektu sportowego.

The popularity of winter sports in Poland is constantly growing. Ski resorts located on mountain glaciers make it possible to practice winter sports all year round, which is not possible in Polish complexes. An alternative option may be indoor ski slopes, which so far are not present in our country. In other countries, many such facilities have already been constructed and they are all very popular among tourists throughout the year. The aim of the thesis was to create a variant design of the construction of an indoor ski slope, considering two architectural and construction concepts of this type of sports facility.

Rozwój funkcji turystycznych w ośrodkach sportów zimowych, duży ruch turystyczny tworzą warunki do powstania atrakcyjnych dla inwestorów terenów inwestycyjnych. Jedną z miar stopnia atrakcyjności inwestycyjnej danego obszaru są notowane na lokalnych rynkach nieruchomości ceny działek, domów rekreacyjnych, hoteli i pensjonatów. Problemem występującym na obszarach górskich są ujemne skutki rozwoju masowej turystyki (w tym narciarstwa zjazdowego), konieczność spełnienia wymogów bezpieczeństwa ekologicznego na obszarach o wysokich wartościach przyrodniczych, a jednocześnie będących szczególnie wrażliwych na degradację środowiska. Wobec realnych perspektyw stałego rozwoju górskich stacji narciarskich w Polsce, istnieje niebezpieczeństwo (przy niedostatecznym poziomie świadomości ekologicznej i stosunkowo niewielkich obszarach nadających się dla narciarstwa) zagrożenia cennych i wrażliwych na inwestycje górskich ekosystemów ze strony masowej, nieuregulowanej turystyki i towarzyszących jej inwestycji.

Development of tourist functions in winter sport centers along with an intensive tourist traffic create attractive investment opportunities. One of the measurements determining the investment attractiveness of an area are prices of properties, lots, cabins, hotels and pensions recorded on the local market. In mountain areas such problems need to be addressed as negative effects of mass tourism development (in that downhill skiing) as well as the necessity to meet the requirements of environmental safety in areas representing high natural quality values which at the same time are sensitive to environmental degradation. At a real perspective of a continuous development of mountain skiing centers in Poland, at an insufficient level of environmental awareness and relatively small surface of areas suitable for ski sports, a mass an uncontrolled development of tourism and related investments may pose risk to valuable and sensitive mountain ecosystems.
