Do 1939 r. Żydzi stanowili 60% ogółu mieszkańców Radomyśla Wielkiego, miasta na południu Polski. Podobno Arthur Miller, czołowy dramaturg XX w., miał tu swoich przodków. Do materialnych dowodów istnienia tamtej społeczności należy zaniedbany cmentarz z mogiłą 500 rozstrzelanych Żydów i głaz upamiętniający ich zagładę. Zachował się budynek dawnej mykwy, w którym obecnie jest sklep. Nieco dalej znajduje się dawny dom rabina, w którym prezentowane są pamiątki po zaginionych mieszkańcach miasta. Wydaje się, że pamięć o zaginionych mieszkańcach i ich kulturze jest dochowywana, ale nadal bez odpowiedzi pozostaje pytanie, dlaczego do tej pory, choć minęło już ponad pół wieku, nie przywrócono materialnych dowodów istnienia przez cztery stulecia w miasteczku społeczności żydowskiej.

Radomysl Wielki is a town in the south of Poland. They were burnt down during World War II and their Jewish owners perished. Until 1939 Jewish people constituted 60% of the town population. The spirituals heritage includes the memory of the former inhabitants of the town. The ancestors of Arthur Miller, an outstanding playwright of the 20 th century are said to have come from Radomyśl Wielki. Material evidence of the presence of Jewish community consists of a neglected cemetery with a grave of 500 Jews who had been shot there and a stone commemorating the execution. Near the square there is a building that used to be a mikvah and now houses a shop. In the former rabbi’s house, slightly further away, there is an exhibition of the objects that remained after their Jewish owners had vanished. Although the memory of the wiped-out inhabitants and their culture seems to be preserved, there still remains the question why, after more than half a century has passed, the material evidence of the four-century-long presence of Jewish community in the town has not been restored.

Miasto to przestrzeń zorganizowana, której tkankę stanowi zbiór budowli-obiektów architektury i przestrzeni między nimi: placów, ulic, obiektów zielonych-parków. Po nich użytkownik porusza się ścieżkami, zmierzając do celów. Można wyodrębnić dwa rodzaje ścieżek: ścieżki wyboru i ścieżki konieczności. Ścieżki wyboru wiodą człowieku ku celom, które ze względu na wyróżniające je cechy przyciągają, zmuszają do zatrzymania się, wzbudzają ciekawość. Ścieżki konieczności natomiast prowadzą do miejsc, które są nieodzowne na danym etapie życia. Są w przestrzeni miasta miejsca, do których nikt nie podąża lub jeśli nawet do nich dotrze nie ma ochoty się w nich zatrzymać. Brak bowiem w ich strukturze elementów niezbędnych dla zaspokojenia całego wachlarza potrzeb człowieka, w sferze zarówno potrzeb biologicznych, kulturowych, społecznych jak i transcendentnej istoty bytu. To martwe przestrzenie.

The City is an organized network that intertwines architectural objects with streets, piazzas and parks where its inhabitant can travel from one area to another using either the route of his own choice or another one propelled by a pure necessity. The routes of choice allow a resident to move towards attractive destination which, by their nature offer a chance to pause and initiate curiosity. The routes chosen out of Necessity steer towards ordinary destination that are however indispensable during the life journey. There are places in the cityscape where nobody chooses to travel, and palces that are easy to abandon if found on the journey. It is not because their structure prevents any form of activity. Such places not able to fulfill the needs of human existence, from the very basic ones to cultural and spiritual. They are lifeless ,enclaves within the cityscape.
