Content available remote Correcting Spelling Errors by Modelling Their Causes

This paper accounts for a new technique of correcting isolated words in typed texts. A language-dependent set of string substitutions reflects the surface form of errors that result from vocabulary incompetence, misspellings, or mistypings. Candidate corrections are formed by applying the substitutions to text words absent from the computer lexicon. A minimal acyclic deterministic finite automaton storing the lexicon allows quick rejection of nonsense corrections, while costs associated with the substitutions serve to rank the remaining ones. A comparison of the correction lists generated by several spellcheckers for two corpora of English spelling errors shows that our technique suggests the right words more accurately than the others.

Content available remote From Raw Corpus to Word Lattices: Robust Pre-parsing Processing with SxPipe

We present a robust full-featured architecture to preprocess text before parsing.This architecture, alled SxPipe, converts raw moisy corpora into word lattices, one by sentence, that can be used as input by a parser. It includes sequentially named-entity recognition, tokenization and sentence boundaries detection, lexicon-aware named-entity recognition, spelling correction, and non-deterministic multi-words processing, re-accentuation and un-/re-capitalization. Though our system currently deals with the French language, almost all components are in fact language-independent, and the others can be strainghtforwardly adapted to virtually any inflectional language. The output is a sequence of word lattices, all words being present in the lexicon. It has been applied on a large scale during a French parsing evaluation campaign and during experiments of large corpora parsing, showing both good efficiency and very satisfying precision and recall.

Artykuł przedstawia koncepcję inteligentnego systemu poprawy błędów pisowni języka polskiego. System ma brać pod uwagę kontekst błędów, typ dokumentu oraz gramatykę i semantykę języka polskiego. Pewne elementy systemu bazują na rozwiązaniach wykorzystywanych w systemach już istniejących na Politechnice Śląskiej.

The article presents a conception of an intelligent system for spelling correction in Polish language. The system should correct errors using the information of the document type and the context in terms of various aspects of grammar and semantics of Polish language.
