Selected examples of studies conducted by the research group from Laboratory of the Basic Aspect of Analytical Chemistry (Faculty of Chemistry, University of Warsaw), related to the investigation of chemical speciation with the use of coupled techniques were discussed in this work. The pioneering investigation was focused on the study of the speciation of mercury in fish tissues and in clinical samples. Then, the intensive researches were conducted towards understanding of the speciation of antimony and selenium in water, plants and clinical objects. Interestingly, the evaluation of the speciation of aluminium become a challenge in respect of the establishing of the reliable analytical procedure, and the use of flow injection for sample operation were explored in this case. The last but not least, the non – routine analytical procedure was developed in the case of zinc speciation in plant exposed to the harmful environmental conditions.

Chromatografia jonowa (IC) w połączeniu ze spektrometrią mas w plazmie indukcyjnie sprzężonej (ICP-MS) daje ogromne możliwości w zakresie oznaczeń różnych form prawie wszystkich pierwiastków układu okresowego. Do określenia indywidualnej formy pierwiastka niezbędne są skuteczne metody separacji badanych analitów i zastosowanie odpowiednich detektorów. Skuteczna technika łączona powinna być: selektywna wobec oznaczanych analitów, czuła w szerokim zakresie i winna umożliwiać jak najlepszą identyfikację oznaczanych substancji. Dlatego jako metody separacyjne wykorzystuje się przede wszystkim metody chromatograficzne, a jako metody detekcji – metody spektroskopowe. Analityka specjacyjna odgrywa znaczącą i wyjątkową rolę zarówno w szerokim spektrum badań związków chemicznych, toksyczności pierwiastków, kontroli jakości, jak i czystości farmaceutyków oraz produktów żywnościowych. Znalazła także zastosowanie w wykonywaniu kompleksowych oznaczeń środowiskowych oraz chemii jądrowej. W pracy scharakteryzowane zostały przykłady zastosowań analityki specjacyjnej w konfiguracji chromatografia jonowa–spektrometria mas w plazmie indukcyjnie sprzężonej oraz zasady działania wybranych technik analitycznych.

Ion chromatography (IC) in combination with mass spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS) offers great potential for various forms nearly all elements of the Periodic Table. In order to determine the individual form of element, necessary is efficient separation of tested analytes and use of suitable detectors. An effective combined technique should be: selective for the designated analytes, sensitive and should enable the best possible identification of substances, which to be measured. Therefore, as a method of separation used primarily chromatographic methods, and as a method of detection – spectroscopic methods. Speciation analyst plays a significant and unique role in a wide range of of research compounds, toxic elements such as quality control and the purity of pharmaceuticals and food products. Speciation analyst also found the use in the performance of complex determinations of environmental and nuclear chemistry. In this paper were characterized examples of applications, features and principles of operation of speciation analysis in the configuration ion chromatography (IC) – mass spectrometry in inductively coupled plasma (ICP-MS).
