Investigations of insert cutting edges during longitudinal turning included total cutting forces analysis as well as intensity and type of edge wear. Cutting pressure was found via measurements of total circumferential force while intensity of edge wear was calculated from VBmax wear value and real machining time of the edge. Qualitative assessment of a kind of edge wear was made with use of scanning microscope. Values of total circumferential cutting force Fc have been shown as a function of cutting speed vc while intensity of edge wear dVB/dt - as dependent on both cutting speed vc and feed value f. The intensity of edge wear versus feed value f was found for various cutting tool materials and edge geometries. The presented characteristics for Fe-Al intermetals machinability show that, because of high total cutting forces and high intensity of edge wear of modern inserts, those materials are difficult-to-machine.
