The paper reviews of European and US emission legislation, methods for lowering exhaust emissions from internal combustion spark-ignition engines, and the current and new technology available to meet the exhaust emission regulations for passenger cars (PC) and light commercial Vehicles (LCV) adopted by European Union countries for years 2000-2010 (Euro III, Euro IV and future Euro V levels). This includes three-way catalysts, close-coupled catalysts, fast light-off catalysts, more thermally durable catalysts, improved substrate technology, hydrocarbon absorbers, elec. heated catalysts, DeNOx catalysts and absorbers.
