The present paper is a continuation of the article which was published in the previous edition of Polish Technical Review. It is a story about Prof. Piotr Wolański from Warsaw University of Technology, a visionary who - apart from the problems concerning combustion, explosions and space drives - was able to give the positive energy and passion to the students as well as his collaborators all over the world. How it happened that a boy from a small, mountainous settlement “reached the stars”, becoming the inspiration to the younger generations? The authoress of paper concentrates her attention on the motivating aspect, being perceived from the viewpoint of Professor as well as his pupils and also, she gives the floor to the mentor himself.

Prof. dr hab. Piotr Wolański (1942-2023) was one the most outstanding Polish scientists of the recent decades, a visionary who brought the enormous contribution to Polish sector of space science when outlining a series of perspective area of development and hypotheses: those ones concerning the origin of the Moon, or decay of dinosaurs. In his scientific activities, he undertook the subjects connected with the problems of combustion and the methods of diagnostics of combustion processes, explosions and engines, and the collisions with the celestial objects. Space drives, development of multi-use rockets and transfer the discussed knowledge to the students were translated into the defined implementations. The first Polish satellite PW-Sat was constructed under the guidance of the Professor at Warsaw University of Technology and the study direction “Aviation and Space Science” became the permanent specialization in the faculties of Polish technical universities.

Suborbital platforms are one of alternatives for satellites. They offer cheaper access to space to perform broad range of scientific and technology R&D. One of suborbital platforms are sounding rockets, which are suitable for these applications. A concept of scientific mission utilizing the sounding rocket is presented by author in this paper. The novelty of this mission is the operational responsive launch approach, which presents the example of the mission which responds for payload user needs, not payload contest approach, which is often in scientific community competing for payload space in space agency sounding rocket launch campaigns. The main mission goal is to perform astronomical observation of NEO using IR/VIS telescope. The secondary goal is to qualify the instrument for use on astronomical satellite observatory and raise its technology readiness level from TRL 6 to TRL 8. The expected mission output is to gain scientific data on NEO object and perform new IR/VIS optoelec-tronic instrument technology validation.
