Music students, both during solo practice and playing in ensembles and orchestras, may be exposed to high-level sounds that can lead to the occurrence of temporary and permanent hearing disorders. In this study, sound level measurements were performed using noise dosimetry with a group of music students of the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music (UMFC) in Warsaw. Based on the measurements, the equivalent sound level LAeq and sound exposure level LEX,8h were determined during solo practice, playing in chamber ensembles, symphony and wind orchestras, as well as in jazz big band. Based on the results it was found that the permissible value of LEX,8h = 85 dB was exceeded in 74% of measured days, and the highest sound levels occurred during solo practice.

In day-to-day life student musicians are often exposed to high-level sounds, that may be damaging for their hearing. At music universities, there are various obligatory activities, such as playing in the symphony or wind orchestra, playing in chamber ensembles or a Big Band. Many hours of individual practice is also mandatory. In every one of these activities, sound pressure levels are often high and the daily sound exposure levels often exceed the permissible limit of 85 dB. In this study, the exemplary results of the daily sound exposure are shown for a group of music students. In contrast to other studies, the measurements were carried out throughout the entire duration of the typical workday, so the calculated daily sound exposure level (LEX,8h) is based on factual data, not estimations. Data concerning the A-weighted equivalent continuous sound pressure level in the function of time are presented for musicians playing the flute, clarinet, double-bass, percussion, trombone, trumpet and French horn, for every activity (e.g. lesson, rehearsal, concert). The daily sound exposure level values (LEX,8h) are determined for each instrument.

Good rehearsal facilities for musicians are essential. Directive 2003/10/EC necessitates that musicians are protected from noise exposure. A code of conduct gives the guidelines how this should be done. This study examines room acoustics recommendations provided by the Finnish code of conduct, and discusses whether they are adequate. Small teaching facilities were measured after renovation and compared to earlier measurements. Teachers’ opinions were inquired about the facilities before and after. The renovation did not decrease the noise exposure of the teachers. However, the majority preferred the facilities after the renovation. The Finnish code of conduct is not sufficient for facilities where loud instruments are played, or band practise. Good facilities can be designed but they must be specified at the designing stage for their intended use.
