Kolejnym etapem rozwoju miast jest rozwój technologii nazywanej chłodem sieciowym. Miejskie elektrociepłownie w rozwiniętych krajach oprócz produkcji depta sieciowego, elektryczności oferują także chłód sieciowy i przy pomocy sieci rurociągów z wodą lodową dostarczają ten chłód do indywidualnych odbiorców. Najbardziej znanym przykładem rozwoju chłodu sieciowego w Europie jest Szwecja - gdzie pierwsze miejskie sieci chłodu powstały w 1992 r. Obecnie liderem produkcji chłodu sieciowego w Europie jest Francja gdzie w postaci chłodu sieciowego odbierane jest 710 MW chłodu. W elektrociepłowniach głównym źródłem chłodu są instalacje sorpcyjne (absorpcyjne i adsorpcyjne), gdyż latem (gdy zapotrzebowanie na chłód jest największe) w elektrociepłowniach pojawia się nadprodukcja ciepła. Także w Polsce powstały instalacje pilotażowe chłodu sieciowego (Poznań, Częstochowa).

The next stage in the development of cities is the development of technology called network coolers. Municipal heat and power plants in developed countries, besides producing network heat, are also beginning to offer cold water, and with the help of cold water pipelines, they supply this cooling to individual consumers. The most well-known example of the development of network cooling in Europe is Sweden, where the first urban cooling networks were established in T 992. At present, the leading cold-water production in Europe is France, where 710 MW of cold air is received in the form of cold network. In the CHP plants, sorption plants (absorption and adsorption) are the main source of heat because in the summer (when the demand for cold is greatest) there is overproduction of heat in CHP plants. Pilot installations have also been established in Poland (Poznań, Częstochowa).
