A novel and safe method has been reported for wastewater sludge treatment, the first step of which is H2O2 pretreatment at 150 cm3kg for 80 min. In this step, the majority of organic substrate was degraded, and the shear stress diminished significantly. In the second step, Aspergillus oryzae further decomposed the organic substrate of sludge for 8 days, and the activities of manganese peroxidase and lignin peroxidase kept increasing. By the methods, the residual chemical oxygen demand (COD) in the sludge was much lower than that in the sludge treated with high doses of H2O2. These results indicate that the present study provides a feasible method to safely dispose sludge from the wastewater treatment plant.

Wyjaśniono przyczynę spadku aktywności enzymatycznej w czasie trwania hodowli i przedstawiono metodę przeciwdziałania temu zjawisku. Zaproponowano warunki prowadzenia procesu szarżowego poprzez określenie sposobu zaszczepienia hodowli, ilości innokulum i okreslenia interwału czasu rozpoczęcia kolejnej szarży.

The research results dealing with Penicillium chrysogenum cultivation on orange peels are presented in the paper. The influence of temperature, water activity and addition of mineral salts on protein productivity with polygalacturonase activity was investigated. The deterioration of enzymatic activity during the cultivation is ex-plained and the counteraction method for this phenomenon is shown. The condition of batch processing was determined based on evaluation of inoculation mode, amount of inoculum and time interval to start the next batch.

Solid state fermentation (SSF) of apple pomace by filamentous fungus Rhizopus oligosporus (generally regarded as safe. GRAS) in a bioreactor with periodical agitation (DRB) is a novel approach in production of functional, high value-added, phenolic supplements for food. During this process fungal glycosidases liberate phenol aglycons from apple pomace thus increasing its antioxidant activity. SSF carried out in a DRB for 12 days resuited in a three-fold rise of the concentration and antioxidant activity of free, ethanol-soluble phenolic compounds. suited in a three-fold rise of the concentration and antioxidant activity of free, ethanol-soluble phenolic compounds.

Peanut hulls (Arachis hypogaea) are waste byproduct in confectionary and oil extraction industry. Disposal of hulls into soil or burning creates considerable technical and economical problem. Thus, the new uses for waste peanut hulls are explored. Possibility of cultivation of fruit bodies of Pleurotus ostreatus on peanut hulls was investigated in this research. Three problems fell within the scope of the work. The first one was the adaption of the mycelium to growth on peanut hulls. The next one was culturing of the mycelium in a submerged culture for inoculation on solid substrate. The last one was the cultivation of mushroom on solid substrate for production of the fruit bodies. It was found that peanut hulls can be used as a suitable substrate for growth of Pleurotus ostreatus mycelium. Weight of the obtained wet fruit bodies was from 0,148 to 0,200 of the wet weight of solid substrate. This result is close to the one obtained by mushroom producers in traditional cultivation.
