This paper presents a different, than commonly used, form of equations describing the filtration of a viscous compressible fluid through a porous medium in isothermal conditions. This mathematical model is compared with the liquid flow equations used in the theory of consolidation. It is shown that the current commonly used filtration model representation significantly differs from the filtration process representation in Biot’s and Terzaghi’s soil consolidation models, which has a bearing on the use of the methods of determining the filtration coefficient on the basis of oedometer test results. The present analysis of the filtration theory equations should help interpret effective parameters of the non-steady filtration model. Moreover, equations for the flow of a gas through a porous medium and an interpretation of the filtration model effective parameters in this case are presented.

This article presents the results of numerical calculations of soil consolidation underneath the “Africa Pavilion” structure in Wrocław Zoo, Poland. To determine the deformations of the baseplate of the “Africa Pavilion” and deformations of the subsoil, Biot’s consolidation theory for two-phase medium was applied. The calculations were carried out using the professional program FlexPDE v.6, which is based on the Finite Element Method. Numerical calculations performed were used to evaluate the design assumptions allowing for the laying of hydraulic conduits under the slab.

The problem of consolidation of soil has been widely investigated. The basic approach was given by Terzaghi who assumed soil of constant physical and mechanical parameters. In the case of peat consolidation, the permeability coefficient of soil and the elasticity modulus are functions of the settlement which is an important additional factor. The model proposed here assumes varying the elasticity and permeability coefficients. Moreover, the settlement is described by the so-called elementary curve which was approximated empirically based upon laboratory tests. The model allows to consider the case when the filtration in the peat body goes in horizontal direction. It happens so when the charging layer does not receive outgoing water from the pores. The model includes also the case when the load involving consolidation varies in time i.e. the charging layer grows up gradually. The model has been applied practically in several cases and it comes that there is a good agreement between calculated and measured settlement of the consolidated peat layer.

W pracy podano rozwiązanie zagadnienia początkowo-brzegowego dla konsolidującej warstwy porowatej z polem temperatury. Przeanalizowano właściwości funkcji opisującej osiadanie brzegu w zależności od parametrów termicznych ośrodka, dla początkowej i końcowej chwili procesu.

The paper presents solution of the system of equations for consolidation of porous medium where pores are filled by a low compressible liquid. The skeleton stress, pore pressure and field temperature are coupled. The solution of an initial-boundary value problem for an uniaxial strain state for the consolidating layer has been analyzed.

Praca obejmuje matematyczne modelowanie zachowania się gruntów organicznych w warunkach zmiennego obciążenia, a w szczególności obciążenia zmiennego cyklicznie. W pracy do opisu osiadania gruntu organicznego pod wpływem obciążenia cyklicznie zmiennego wykorzystano odpowiednio zmodyfikowany klasyczny model Terzaghiego, uwzględniający cechy sprężysto-plastyczne oraz wprowadzono zamiast stałych, zmienne w czasie parametry geotechniczne tego ośrodka.

The paper presents a model of organic soils consolidation in laboratory tests. To describe the Terzaghi's model of consolidation was used. Terzaghi's model takes into consideration pore pressure. This paper presents a mathematical discription of organic soil behaviour under variable cyclic load. To modify Terzaghi's model of consolidation the elastic and plastic properties were used.
