The clay soils in the hydraulic barriers also act as an important medium for the attenuation of some contaminants due to sorption. The sorptivity of soils effect significanly the contaminant transport mechanism in landfill subsoils. In order to check the sorptivity of soils in two landfills, at Łuków and Marki, soil column tests were carried out. The test resuls of Łuków silty clay indicated that 80% of Na+ cations and 90% of K+ cations were attenuated due to sorption from solution. Comparing the test results obtained for contaminated liquids and effluent for varved clay it was seen that the concentration was substantialy reduced.
