Metabolism is the process of energetic and matter transformation, which takes place in living systems. The issues of the environmental protection can be treated as the problems of metabolism between society and nature; human communities can survive only if they are able to exchange energy and matter with their .natural environment, enabling them to satisfy their biological needs. Society and ; economy may be perceived as the organisms obtaining matter and energy from nature; transforming them and giving back redundant by-products. Metabolism nationalized in such a way can be related to whole anthropological sphere of national economy, industry and household management. The issue of colonisation refers to the human activities combination, which alters certain aspects of the natural systems and detain them in transfigured state. These problems were presented in connection with the research done by the Social Ecology Department in Vienna. The article contains also the author's reflections on the concept of social ecology.
