Intensive development of the Upper Silesian region in recent years has resulted in the official establishment of the first urban organism in 2017 - the metropolis. The Upper Silesian and Zagłębie Metropolis is a diverse region which currently covers 41 communes. The subject of this paper, however, is not so much a description of differences as an attempt to capture the pace and course of revitalisation taking place in cities selected for analysis, in order to answer the question of how they affect the development of those cities and whether the fact that they belong to the same urban organism, which is the metropolis, determines their relatively balanced development. The following cities have become the subject of the comparative sociological-economic analysis in the selected area: Katowice, Zabrze, Tarnowskie Góry, Bytom and Ruda Śląska.

Artykuł porusza problematykę związana ze społecznym wymiarem kreacji i odnowy przestrzeni miejskiej. Podkreślony został fakt, iż przestrzeń jest społecznie akceptowana wtedy, gdy otwiera się na użytkowników: ich preferencje, potrzeby i aspiracje. Odnosząc się do osiągnięć wybitnych badaczy, jak: Znaniecki, Jałowiecki, Wallis, Hall, Lynch, zwrócono uwagę na fakt oddziaływania przestrzeni na człowieka i wymiar społeczny jej kreacji i odnowy. Autor wskazuje także na potrzebę zwiększenia stopnia partycypacji społecznej w procesach rewitalizacji tkanki miejskiej.

The following paper deals with the questions of the city space creation and revitalization. It is accentuated that the city space must be open to the people’s needs, preferences and aspirations because only in this way city space could be accepted by its users. According to the outstanding researchers as: Znaniecki, Jałowiecki, Wallis, Hall, Lynch, the author focused main attention on the aspects of the influence of the city space on its users. There was also underlined the need of increasing the social participation in the city revitalization process.
