A dental stool with chest support reduces lower back muscle activation

Activation of back musculature during work tasks leads to fatigue and potential injury. This is especially prevalent in dentists who perform much of their work from a seated position. We examined the use of an ergonomic dental stool with mid-sternum chest support for reducing lower back muscle activation. Electromyography of lower back extensors was assessed from 30 dental students for 20 s during three conditions in random order: (a) sitting upright at 90° of hip flexion on a standard stool, (b) leaning forward at 80° of hip flexion on a standard stool, and (c) leaning forward at 80° of hip flexion while sitting on an ergonomic stool. Muscular activity of the back extensors was reduced when using the ergonomic stool compared to the standard stool, by 33–50% (p < 0.01). This suggests a potential musculoskeletal benefit with use of a dental stool with mid-sternum chest support.

The paper presents the method of determining the stresses in cervical spine vertebrae. It is based on techniques known from strength of materials – the theory of strongly curved beams. It allows to determine normal stresses in vertebrae of cervical part of spine with known characteristic dimensions. The method was tested on three different cases of cervical spine conformation: one properly and two improperly curved spinal line. Obtained information about influence of spine geometry on character and value of stresses could be useful in clinical practice.

The work presents the possibilities of memory staplers' application in the treatment of idiopathic scoliosis of frontal access. During the operation, good initial scoliosis correction was achieved, which resulted from the change of stapler's shape being the outcome of a stapler reaching the temperature of a human body.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki uzyskane podczas przeprowadzonych symulacji numerycznych dynamiki kręgosłupa człowieka wykonanych w programie "Kręg". Modelowano najczęściej wymieniane w literaturze przyczyny powstawania skrzywień bocznych kręgosłupa oraz analizowano ich wpływ na wielkość i charakter skolioz.

This paper presents results of numerical simulations of human spine dynamics, performed with the use of program "Kręg". The factors, listed in published works as main causes of lateral spine distortion, were modelled, and their influence on the magnitude and shape of distortion was analysed.

W pracy przedstawiono metodykę badań pozwalającą na ocenę wad postawy ciała w oparciu o wideorejestrację. Opracowana metoda pozwala na analizę przemieszczeń kręgów kręgosłupa w płaszczyźnie czołowej podczas ruchu, a także w pozycjach statycznych. W pracy zamieszczono przykładowe wyniki badań dla osób o prawidłowej geometrii kręgosłupa oraz osób ze skrzywieniami bocznymi.

The purpose of this paper is the presentation and the assessment of the chosen results of the research work. Carried out on the person with scoliosis and comparing it with the person having a straight spine. In the above mentioned reserch the work of the spine is monitored from the frontal surface. Furthermore the aim of the paper is to show the diagnostic opportunities by means of using video recording as for as dynamie spine dislocations during the movement are concerned.
