Micropayments in games using the FIFA series as an example – fun or e-gambling accessible to children? Discussion around controversy and regulation

Purpose: The study's main objective was to identify the risks associated with game developers' mechanisms to define the micropayment system, using the example of EA Sports' practices in the FIFA series of games. The specific objectives were: to define the form in which micropayments occur in games of the FIFA series, to determine the factors that affect the attractiveness of micropayments to players, and to define the similarities between loot boxes and gambling games. Design/methodology/approach: The authors highlighted the payments used by game developers available from within the app, their characteristics and the juxtaposition of these mechanisms with those used in gambling. Then, using desk research analysis, the financial benefits of using this system for the developers of the FIFA series were analyzed, as well as the identified potential risks of these practices. The authors based their considerations on Polish and foreign literature, studying academic articles, books, reports, and chapters from monographs and electronic sources. The following professional, scientific databases were used to gather scientific literature: Google Scholar, ResearchGate and ScienceDirect. Findings: Micropayments are an essential source of additional revenue for game developers. Not only do they effectively engage players, but the value of additional in-game purchases often exceeds the product's original price (i.e. the full-priced game). The term micropayments, in this case, is already used conventionally - it is widespread for some in-game purchases to be as much as hundreds of zlotys. Because of their apparent similarities to gambling, loot boxes, or boxes with randomized prizes, are controversial - so much so that countries such as Belgium are considered gambling and do not allow for young people. Typical users of micropayments in games are minors, who are more easily influenced by the persuasion practised by game developers, especially in multiplayer games, where a competitive element and additional content can improve a player's performance. Social implications: Due to mechanisms using microtransactions, companies can profit significantly from selling complementary content after the revenue from product sales has already been generated. Loot boxes engage players, but they also raise a lot of controversy and doubts due to their disturbing resemblance to gambling. Originality/value: The treatment of issues treating the phenomenon of micropayments in online games is based on the literature on the subject, Polish and foreign, enriching the existing body of scientific work on the gaming industry, signalling the authors' contribution to the development of the discipline of management and quality sciences. The article is primarily addressed to researchers and scholars dealing with e-gaming in the context of its various dimensions. The work may also interest students of marketing, psychology and pedagogy. In addition, the article is valuable for parents and guardians of children and adolescents who spend time on online games to outline the problem of micropayments in games. The article's value is a comprehensive discussion of gambling, micropayments and "loot box" mechanics about the controversies and regulations surrounding them.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki zmian nacisków powierzchniowych jabłek umieszczonych w skrzynce w zależności od obciążenia – wysokości warstwy. W pierwszej kolejności wykonane zostały testy ściskania całych jabłek, prowadzone aż do zniszczenia - momentu osiągnięcia granicy wytrzymałości biologicznej. Na podstawie krzywych ściskania sił w funkcji przemieszczenia F = f(ΔL) ustalono zakresy sił powodujących lokalne zniszczenia struktury wewnętrznej owoców oraz wyznaczono maksymalne siły niszczące Fmax. Przy pomocy aparatury Tekscan wyznaczono naciski powierzchniowe jabłek w warunkach statycznych dzięki jednoczesnemu rejestrowaniu sił ściskających i odpowiadających im powierzchni kontaktu z powierzchnią czujnika umieszczonego na spodzie skrzynki. Analiza średnich rozkładów sił w wybranych 5 punktach wykazała ich zróżnicowany charakter. Maksymalne wartości sił otrzymano dla środkowej strefy skrzynki – wynosiły 6,83 N przy pełnym obciążeniu skrzynki trzema warstwami jabłek. Wzrost powierzchni kontaktu jabłek ze ściankami bocznymi powodował zmniejszenie nacisków powierzchniowych do wartości 0,034 MPa, natomiast w miejscach przylegania jabłek do siebie (strefie centralnej dna skrzynki) zmniejszona powierzchnia styku determinowała wzrost nacisków do 0,082 MPa. Przeprowadzone badania w warunkach statycznych obciążeń trzema warstwami jabłek wskazują, że skrzynka „jedynka” stanowi dobry obiekt do przechowywania i transportu.

The paper presents results of changes of surface pressures of apples placed in the box depending on the load- the height of a layer. Firstly, compression tests of whole apples were carried out to the level of damage - the moment of reaching the biological resistance limit. Based on curves of forces compression as the function of relocation F = f(ΔL), scopes of forces, which cause local damage to the inside structure of fruit, and the maximum destruction forces were determined Fmax. With the use of Tekscan apparatus, surface pressures of apples were determined in the static conditions due to simultaneous registering of compression forces and the responding surface of contact with the surface of the sensor placed at the bottom of the box. Analysis of the average forces distribution in the selected 5 points proved their varied nature. The maximum values of forces for a middle sphere of the box were obtained and they amounted to 6.83 N at a full loading of the box with three layers of apples. Increase of the contact surface of apples with side walls caused decrease of the surface pressure to the value of 0.034 MPa, whereas in the places of adherence of apples (central sphere of the bottom of the box), a decreased contact surface determined the increase of pressures to 0.082 MPa. The investigation, which was carried out in the conditions of static loads with three layers of apples, prove that a single box constitutes a good object for storing and transport.

Konieczność poszukiwań rozwiązań alternatywnych dla tradycyjnego kanalizowania wód opadowych jest obecnie oczywista. Potrzeba wynika ze względów zarówno technicznych, jak i ekonomicznych oraz ekologicznych. Istotą problemu jest to, aby rozwiązania zastępcze były technicznie skuteczne, wiązały się z kosztami na akceptowalnym poziomie dla konkretnego inwestora oraz nie powodowały tworzenia kolejnych zagrożeń - ani sanitarnych, ani technicznych.

Sprawna organizacja odbioru wód opadowych należy do podstawowych warunków prawidłowego funkcjonowania jednostek osadniczych oraz transportu. Nawet pozostawanie niewielkiej warstwy wody, tworzącej charakterystyczny film na nawierzchni drogi, stanowi poważne zagrożenie dla bezpieczeństwa ruchu drogowego.
