Vessel grounding accidents can potentially cause catastrophic marine accidents with environmental pollution and loss of life and economy. New systems introduced to improve safety of navigation should not be cause them. Today, the ECDIS is the main cartographic system and must therefore be an appropriate aid to support seafarers in building situational awareness with the relevant information needed for safe navigation. This paper describes the development of situational awareness and its features after which the maritime grounding accidents, in the period from 2008 to 2019 are analysed. Due to importance of the ECDIS, only ECDIS related accidents were considered. The aim of this paper was to determine which error ceased the development of good situational awareness and to determine whether there is a certain pattern by which to predict future errors and thus act preventively on them. This study shows at which situation awareness level those errors occurred and which SA demon affected the seafarers to perform an error.

This paper presents a comparative analysis of manoeuvring patterns through the fairway which is marked with physical and virtual Aids to Navigation (AtoN). The impact of V-AtoN environment on decision-making and on consequent manoeuvres has never been studied in such a way. The results published in this paper were obtained using TRANSAS Navi Trainer 5000 and TRANSAS ECDIS 4000 simulators where 12 deck officers with at least 5 years of sea service participated. The results of the study indicate that there is a significant difference in manoeuvring patterns between the two environments. In case of virtual environment, more intense drift angles, ROTs as well as XTDs are observed. The paper demonstrates significant impact of virtual environment on behaviour of OOW.

Content available Operations of maritime autonomous surface ships
EN
Advancing technologies create unique opportunities for constructing autonomous ships, which, in turn, raise growing interest of the maritime industry, shipowners in particular. These authors have analyzed actions taken in this field and some aspects related to the operations of maritime autonomous surface ships (MASS). The presented case study refers to a ship with a skeleton crew on a deep sea voyage, where the ship’s autonomy is narrowed to the fourth stage of transport task – sea voyage and its navigational aspect.
