Pamięć zbiorowa utrwalona w krajobrazie może stać się źródłem zasobów dla tworzenia współczesnego dziedzictwa kulturowego obszaru miejskiego. W przypadku gdy unicestwiona zostaje społeczność, zamieszkująca dane terytorium, proces ten może zostać podjęty przez współczesnych mieszkańców. Celem artykułu jest ocena stopnia zachowania i przekształcenia w miejsca pamięci potencjalnych nośników pamięci na obszarze trzech powiatów grodzkich wchodzących w skład Trójmiasta. Badania oparto o metody analizy literatury, lokalnych mediów, wybranych mediów społecznościowych oraz źródeł informacji turystycznej, których rezultaty zweryfikowano następnie w badaniach terenowych. Wyniki wskazują na różny przebieg procesu wytwarzania i zachowania materialnych nośników pamięci o historii Żydów w trzech miastach. Fazę identyfikacji zasobów uznano za zrealizowaną, podczas gdy faza transformacji w postaci nadawania nośnikom znaczeń poprzez upamiętnienia i organizację wydarzeń ma bardzo ograniczony zasięg. Próba oceny fazy inkorporacji, czyli przyznania im rangi dziedzictwa pozwoliła stwierdzić, że proces ten zaczął się dopiero i dotyczy jedynie pojedynczych nośników.

To create a modern cultural heritage of a certain area, the collective memory preserved in the landscape may be employed. In cases when the former citizens have vanished, this process can be undertaken by the contemporary inhabitants. This paper aims to evaluate both the state of the potential material vehicles of the historic memory and the advancement of the process of their heritagisation. The case study concerns the Jewish minority which used to live in three administrative units belonging to the Tricity metropolitan area in Northern Poland. The methods applied to the study include an analysis of literature, local media, selected social media, and sources of tourist information, while the results were verified through field research. The results prove that there is a different story behind the Jewish settlement in all three areas and the material vehicles of their memory have been preserved to different degrees, while the process of their heritagisation also differs. However, a transformation of the liminal landscape is advanced only in the case of the first phase of the identification of assets when attaching meaning to them has just started, and the last phase, understood as incorporation into heritage, is rare.

Tekst omawia zagadnienie miejsca pamięci w rozumieniu wprowadzonym przez Pierra Norę, koncentrując się na obiektach architektonicznych stanowiących materialny komponent miejsc pamięci. Część z nich to zespoły architektoniczne lub budynki o ikonicznym charakterze, stanowiące zasadniczy komponent miejsca pamięci. Inna grupa to obiekty o ugruntowanej pozycji w świadomości zbiorowej, które ze względu na zniszczenie materialnego komponentu w wyniku dramatycznych wydarzeń historycznych umocniły swój status miejsca pamięci i zostały odbudowane. Pewną mutację stanowią te przypadki, w których nowa kreacja na miejscu zburzonego obiektu tworzy materialny komponent nowego miejsca pamięci. We wszystkich omawianych przypadkach rygorystyczne przestrzeganie zasad konserwatorskich jak przy obiektach zabytkowych, nie wydaje się mieć pierwszorzędnego znaczenia.

The author discusses the concept of a site of memory as understood by Pierre Nora while focusing on architectural structures which constitute material components of sites of memory. Some of them are architectonic ensembles or iconic buildings which are the major component of a site of memory. Other group includes structures which are deeply rooted in social memory and which, due to their material component destruction as a result of dramatic events in history, reinforced its position as sites of memory and were restored. There are also certain anomalous cases – a new structure developed where a destroyed one was once built, constitutes a material component of a new site of memory. In all the cases discussed, rigorous adherence to the principles of historic preservation, as in case of historic buildings, does not seem to be of primary importance.

Mija 100 lat od wybudowania w dawnej Galicji Zachodniej, dzisiejszej Małopolsce ponad 400 cmentarzy wojennych, będących pamiątką walk między armią austro-węgierską i carską. Pośród poległych znaleźli się żołnierze wielu narodowości i różnych wyznań. Przez lata cmentarze te pozostawały zaniedbane, co zaczęło się zmieniać po roku 1989. Dziś problemem jest nie tylko konserwacja ich zabytkowej substancji, ale dewastacja na tle ideologicznym. W artykule podjęta została problematyka ochrony ocalałych ponad 370 miejsc pamięci zarówno z materialnego punktu widzenia, jak i sposobów wpisania tych pomników w społeczną pamięć historyczną tak, aby stały się częścią naszej tożsamości.

It is now 100 years since the development in the former Austro-Hungarian province of West Galicia, today's Polish province of Malopolska, of more than 400 war cemeteries, which are a reminder of the fighting between the Austro-Hungarian and Tsarist armies at the time of the Great War. Among the fallen were soldiers of many different nationalities and religions. For many years, these cemeteries remained neglected, a situation which fortunately began to change only after 1989. Today, one of the problems is the conservation of their historic existence, not only the constructional decay but also the increasingly ideological devastation. The article discusses the protection of more then 370 surviving memorial sites from both the material point of view as well as the ways in which they can be added into our historical memory in order for them to become part of our national identity.

Niektóre miejsca w sposób szczególny przechowują naszą zbiorową pamięć, są materialnym nośnikiem naszej historii i tożsamości. Jedną z możliwości ochrony, ale także wyeksponowania takich miejsc są ustalenia dokumentów planistycznych. Ujawniane są w nich nie tylko miejsca pamięci o randze narodowej, ale także inne. Kategoryzacja miejsc pamięci jest również istotna z punktu widzenia zakresu ich ochrony. W Łodzi, w aktualnie opracowywanym dokumencie studium wyróżniono w tym zakresie: 1) miejsca walk i martyrologii, 2) groby i mogiły wojenne, 3) pomniki i obeliski, 4) cmentarze (w tym cmentarze zapomniane), 5) wyburzone synagogi, 6) tablice pamiątkowe. Miejsca pamięci są tematem trudnym, wielowątkowym, dotykającym często zagadnień delikatnych, takich jak ludzkie uczucia, pamięć, są to również miejsca z którymi wiążą bolesne i smutne wspomnienia. Tym bardziej wskazać trzeba na potrzebę ogromnej pieczołowitości i staranności na każdym etapie ich rozpoznania, definiowania czy formułowania zasad ochrony lub dopuszczenia ewentualnego przekształcenia. Przekazanie pamięci miejsca poprzez zachowanie miejsc pamięci jest to ogromna zbiorowa odpowiedzialność i zarazem wyzwanie.

Some places hold our collective memory in a particular way, they are a material carrier of our history and identity. One of the possibilities of the protection and exposure of such places are the arrangements of planning documents. They reveal not only memorial sites of national rank but also others. The categorization of memory places is also important from the point of view of their protection. In Lodz, the currently developed study document highlights: 1) places of battles and martyrdom, 2) graves and war graves, 3) monuments and stone obelisks, 4) cemeteries (including forgotten cemeteries), 5) demolished synagogues, 6) memorial plaques. Sites of Memory are a difficult, multi-threaded subject, often affecting delicate issues, such as human feelings, memory, these are also places with which they bind painful and sad memories. All the more, we need to point out the need for great care and diligence at every stage of their recognition, defining or formulating the principles of protection or allowing for any transformation. Passing the memory of the place through the preservation of Sites of Memory is a huge collective responsibility and a challenge.
