The aim of this article is to make a multi-criteria analysis of various exhibition spaces of an originally non-exhibition character and to determine how these spaces affect the selection of works and the exhibition concept. The analysis is based on the exhibitions of art objects at collective exhibitions in unconventional architectural spaces: commercial, post-industrial and in the historic interior. The multi-criteria comparative analysis shows a variety of features of the studied spaces as well as the relationship between architecture and art and their mutual interaction, and the participatory role of the non-exhibition space in the process of creating an exhibition and selecting works has been proven.

Celem artykułu jest dokonanie wielokryterialnej analizy komparatystycznej różnych przestrzeni wystawienniczych, niepełniących pierwotnie funkcji galerii sztuki oraz ustalenie w jaki sposób wpływają one na dobór dzieł i koncepcję wystawy. Analizy dokonano na podstawie ekspozycji prac plastycznych na wystawach zbiorowych w trzech niekonwencjonalnych przestrzeniach architektonicznych: komercyjnej, poprzemysłowej oraz zabytkowej. Wielokryterialna analiza porównawcza wykazała heterogeniczność cech badanych miejsc oraz dynamikę relacji i interakcji zachodzących pomiędzy architekturą, a sztuką oraz partycypacyjną rolę przestrzeni architektonicznej w procesie tworzenia ekspozycji i doboru dzieł.

The article is based on the author's search for the relationship between painting and architecture and experiencing the space in the context of using its potential for painting exhibition. This is a summary of research carried out in 2017- 2019 at the Faculty of Architecture of Poznań University of Technology, entitled "Artwork in architecture". This project aimed to explore the relationship between art and architectural space. Participation in the collective exhibitions, as a part of the first research stage, and the implementation of individual exhibitions in the second stage of the project, have become the basis for author's decisions in this field. The research findings were included in two monographs by a two-person research team, made up of prof. dr hab. Andrzej Maciej Łubowski and dr hab. Joanna Stefańska, titled "SPACES, artwork in architecture" and "RELATIONS, artwork in architecture", PUT Publishing House 2019, 2020. Searching for the best means of recording meaning and emotions connected with the theme of landscape undertaken by the author as well as the thoroughly analysed issue of the functioning of paintings series in the context of the exhibition space, translate into the process of exploration a relationship between artwork and architecture. The exhibition of paintings and selection of proper exhibition space affect an artwork’s reception. The exhibition’s design should exhaust the relationship between contemplation and dialogue in both the painting space and the broader architectural context. It can be stated that the mutual relationship of the artwork and the architectural space surrounding it affects the artwork’s meaning and aesthetics as well as the architecture’s perception.

Recent Polish architecture in the context of historic sites is replete with the examples of structures tying in with their context. There are many buildings in all scales that may be deemed site specific. The article discusses the issue whether such an architectural approach may be regarded as the conservation of identity.

Powstało wiele budynków we wszystkich skalach, które można określić jako site-specific. Artykuł dyskutuje kwestię, czy można uznać takie podejście za konserwację tożsamości miejsca.

Site-specific art is a term referring to works of art created with a view to functioning strictly in a particular place for a particular location, environment, landscape, a specific and peculiar space. It is deeply contextual, so in regard to the issue of the protection of a historic city, one can ask about its role and scope of creation as a condition for its sustainable development. What is meant by sustainable development? And how to perceive the thought of the great Aquinas, referring to the concept of Creatio (gr.), an act of creative action, bringing some existence to life and keeping it alive – the basic principle of conservation. Let us try to confront the experimental language of contemporary artists with Gombrich’s theory of time-cultural relativism, the meaning of the genius loci of the place, based on sources and our own educational and artistic experience.

Sztuka site-specific to określenie odnoszące się do dzieł sztuki stworzonych z myślą o funkcjonowaniu w ściśle w określonym miejscu, przeznaczonych do szczególnej lokalizacji lub otoczenia: środowiska, krajobrazu, przestrzeni specyficznej i osobliwej. Jest głęboko kontekstualna, dlatego w odniesieniu do zagadnienia ochrony miasta historycznego, można zadać pytanie o jej rolę i zasięg kreacji jako warunku dla jego zrównoważonego rozwoju. Co oznacza rozwój zrównoważony? I jak postrzegać myśl wielkiego Akwinaty, odwołującego się do pojęcia creation (gr.), aktu twórczego działania, powołania do życia i utrzymania bytu – podstawowej zasady konserwatorskiej. Spróbujmy zatem skonfrontować: eksperymentalny język działania współczesnych artystów z gombrichowską teorią relatywizmu czasowo-kulturowego, znaczeniem genius loci miejsca, w oparciu o źródła oraz własne doświadczenia naukowo-dydaktyczne i artystyczne.

Artykuł ten próbuje przybliżyć temat relacji dźwięku i przestrzeni na podstawie analizy zmian dyskursu muzycznego. Problematyka ta znajduje odzwierciedlenie zarówno w referowanych tekstach teoretycznych, jak i wybranych praktykach artystycznych. Autor stawia tezę na temat postrzegania rzeczywistości społecznej, sugerując, że gdyby świat brzmiał inaczej, to również inaczej by wyglądał.

This article attempts to bring about the relationship of sound and space on the basis of changes in musical discourse. This problem is reflected both in the referred texts of selected theoretical and artistic practices. The author’s thesis on the perception of social reality, suggesting that if the world sounded different, it is also contrary to look.
