Historia ukraińskich sił zbrojnych, od powstania państwa ukraińskiego (1991 rok) do aneksji Krymu, rozpoczęła się od procesu denuklearyzacji armii. Towarzyszył jej spontaniczny proces redukcji stanu osobowego i kilka nieudanych prób jej kosmetycznej modernizacji. Polityczne i zbrojne działania Federacji Rosyjskiej radykalnie zmieniły relacje ukraińsko-rosyjskie oraz zdecydowanie przyśpieszyły proces budowy ukraińskiego państwa w tym jego armii. Aneksja Krymu w 2014 roku oraz jej zaangażowanie w Donbasie stały się punktem zwrotnym w historii ukraińskiej armii i mogą stanowić początek ostatniego etapu transformacji w armię narodową suwerennego państwa. Obecnie ukraińska armia jest w trakcie przebudowy, jej finał nie jest łatwy do przewidzenia. Można jednak przyjąć hipotezę, że najlepsza nawet armia nie będzie miała szans na zwycięstwo w wojnie prowadzonej w szarej strefie i charakterystycznymi dla niej metodami. Gdy zgodzimy się na rosyjskie reguły gry, a szarej strefie nie przeciwstawimy solidarnej obrony międzynarodowego porządku prawnego, to zdecydowanie obniżymy jej szanse na odzyskanie kontroli nad granicą z Rosją.

The history of the Ukrainian armed forces, from the establishment of the Ukrainian state (1991) to the annexation of Crimea, began with the process of denuclearization of the army. It was accompanied by a spontaneous process of headcount reduction and the several unsuccessful attempts of cosmetic modernization of the remains of the Soviet army. That process corresponded to the logic of the oligarchic and highly corrupted state. The last phase of the process of transformation of the armed forces was related to the policy of Yanukovich. It was connected, in its essence, with the disarming and preparing the Ukrainian army for the voluntary submission to the fraternal Russian army. The Ukrainian army was never, after 1991, subjected to the civil control. While a significant part of its territory is occupied by Russia and there is an ongoing conflict in the east, fuelled by the aggressor, Ukraine has to undertake the reforms, the burden of which is borne by its society. The revival of Ukrainian identity, based on the fight against the aggressor, may help to strengthen the structures of the state. The annexation of Crimea by Russia and its intervention in eastern Ukraine may turn out to be a new beginning for the Ukrainian armed forces – may constitute the beginning of the last stage of transformation of a part of the postimperial army into the national army of the sovereign state.
