This paper shows the results of using the modified kaolin by silane coupling agents in HDPE composite and the effect of surface modifications of fillers on the properties of polyethylene composites. In the first stage pure and modified kaolin was subjected to a number of tests in order to determine the backfill density, water and paraffin oil absorbability, the surface area and pore volume, the morphology of their grains, thermal analysis and the FT-IR spectroscopy. In the second stage the composites, which were moulded into the samples that could be subjected to further tests, were produced. The samples were characterised by the determination of the hardness according to Shore, the elasticity modulus, the tensile strength and tearing strength. The modification of the kaolin surface has resulted in a substantial improvement of the strength parameters of the obtained polyethylene composites.

Studies were conducted on the modification of titanium white surface using selected silane coupling agents. The effect of the concentration of the organic coupling agents was examined (0.5; 1 or 3 weight parts per 100 weight parts of TYTANPOL R-003, TYTANPOL R-211 or TYTANPOL R-213 preparation of titanium white). The dispersive properties were determined by an estimation of the particle size distribution curves and of the polydispersity index. Moreover, microscopic observations were conducted permitting to evaluate the surface morphology of the modified TiO2 particles. The profiles of sedimentation in water were also determined for the titanium whites and the BET specific surface areas were determined. Selected samples of the modified and unmodified titanium whites were subjected to elemental analysis.

Studies were performed on adsorption of pigments (Neutral Red or Methylene Blue) on silica adsorbents. The adsorbents included a modified Syloid®244 silica and spherical silica, precipitated from emulsion. The adsorption yielded pigments on the silica carier, which were subjected to physicochemical evaluation.

Studies were performed on adsorption of an organic dye, C.I. Acid Orange 7 on silica surface. In the obtained pigments, grain size, particle size distribution, uniform character, tendency to form agglomerates as well as particle surface morphology were examined using SEM and DLS techniques.

Surface area of precipitated calcium carbonate was modified by using difuncional compound - aminocapronic acid. This modification led to increase the porosity of the filler. As a result of the modification the z potential of the water dispersions of the filler changed. We also tried to modify CaCO3 by using silanes coupling agents as a second modifying agent of the calcium carbonate so that interaction between fillers particles and elastomers matrix increased. The activity of modified fillers in butadiene-acrylonitrile NBR and its carboxylated modification XNBR was studied.

Studies were performed on the precipitation of silica from aqueous solution of potassium metasilicate and sulphuric acid. The surface modification of precipitated silicas using silane coupling agents was undertaken. The obtained silicas were subjected to physicochemical appraisal. The surface charge of the obtained dispersion, particle size and shape of the formed silicas were estimated.

Zbadano wpływ środków sprzęgających na mechaniczne i elektryczne właściwości żywic epoksydowych napełnianych mączką kwarcową. Pracy badano próbki bez silanu oraz z silanem reagującym i nie reagującym z żywicą. Wszystkie próbki badano przed i po działaniu gotującej wody przez 100 godzin. Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników można stwierdzić, że wbrew dotychczasowym poglądom pełna ocena przydatności kompozytu epoksydowego do pracy w warunkach wzmożonej wilgotności jest możliwa jedynie w oparciu o jednoczesne badania parametrów mechanicznych i elektrycznych.

The effect of the coupling agents on the mechanical and electrical properties of epoxy composites with a silica flour has been examined. It has been found that the addition of silane has the negligible effect on the properties of fresh samples. The subjecting of samples to the action of water having a temperature of 100 degree C considerably affects the deterioration of the mechanical and electric properties of samples devoid of silane, whereas the addition of silane makes the samples significantly resistant to the action of water. The samples with the reacting and nonreacting silane have been investigated. It has been found that the complete estimation of usability of epoxy composite for working in the intensive wet conditions is possible only by simultaneous tests of mechanical and electric parameters.
