Deep neural networks (DNNs) have recently become one of the most often used softcomputational tools for numerical analysis. The huge success of DNNs in the field of imageprocessing is associated with the use of convolutional neural networks (CNNs). CNNs,thanks to their characteristic structure, allow for the effective extraction of multi-layerfeatures. In this paper, the application of CNNs to one of the important soil-structureinteraction (SSI) problems, i.e., the analysis of vibrations transmission from the free-field next to a building to the building foundation, is presented in the case of mine-induced vibrations. To achieve this, the dataset from in-situ experimental measurements, containing 1D ground acceleration records, was converted into 2D spectrogram imagesusing either Fourier transform or continuous wavelet transform. Next, these images wereused as input for a pre-trained CNN. The output is a ratio of maximal vibration valuesrecorded simultaneously on the building foundation and on the ground. Therefore, the lastlayer of the CNN had to be changed from a classification to a regression one. The obtainedresults indicate the suitability of CNN for the analyzed problem.

Due to their many advantages, permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) are increasingly used in not only industrial drive systems but also electric and hybrid vehicle drives, aviation and other applications. Unfortunately, PMSMs are not free from damage that occurs during their operation. It is assumed that about 40% of the damage that occurs is related to rolling bearing damage. This article focuses on the use of Kohonen neural network (KNN) for rolling bearing damage detection in a PMSM drive system. The symptoms from the fast Fourier transform (FFT) and Envelope (ENV) Analysis of the mechanical vibration acceleration signal were analysed. The signal ENV was obtained by applying the Hilbert transform (HT). Two neural network functions are discussed: a detector and a classifier. The detector detected the damage and the classifier determined the type of damage to the rolling bearing (undamaged bearing, damaged rolling element, outer or inner race). The effectiveness of the analysed networks from the point of view of the applied signal processing method, map size, type of neighbourhood radius, distance function and the influence of input data normalisation are presented. The results are presented in the form of a confusion matrix, together with 2D and 3D maps of active neurons.

This work presents a new epileptic seizures epoch classification scheme. Variational mode decomposition (VMD), has been explored for non-recursively decomposing the electroencephalogram (EEG) signals into fourteen band limited intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). Data augmentation (DA), has been used for handling unbalanced classification problem. Normalized energy, fractal dimension, number of peaks, and prominence parameters were computed from the band-limited IMFs for the discrimination of seizure and non-seizure epochs. Bayesian regularized shallow neural network (BR-SNNs) and six other well-known classifiers were tested. Sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy have been used as performance metrics. This study includes two different epoch lengths of 1-second and 2-seconds. A total of 32 test cases for both, class balanced and unbalanced classification problems have been taken for the performance evaluation. The best performance obtained is 100% for all the three metrics from the test cases of database-2 and 3. For database-1, average sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of 99.71, 99.75, and 99.73% have been achieved, respectively for the 1-second epoch. The presented work shows better performance results compared to many previously reported works.
