The substrate, whose compressibility has been analysed, served as subsoil for indirect foundations of bridges. A significant settlement of foundations was recorded while performing load tests. The results of the analysis indicate the specific structure of the Krakowiec Clays, as the cause of insufficient bearing capacity of piles. Small thickness of clay and silt layers prevents their separation, and certainly does not allow treating them as two soil types with different properties. The tested soil should be considered as a kind of natural composite, whose characteristics are unlikely to be "the resultant" of properties of constituent soils. Despite the high soil strength (very high values of strength parameters), the measured oedometer compression modules were significantly different from the standard attributed to this type of soils. The values of oedometer compression modules correspond with those prescribed by back analysis of settlement measured during the load test of piles. They were tested on natural undisturbed samples and on prepared samples of different humidities (from soil paste). The results were compared with those obtained by other researchers for soils of similar origin and alike physical properties.

The paper presents the capacity of driven precast pile prediction method based on the results of CPT tests. The pile settlement equal to 10% of pile diameter is assumed as a criterion of pile capacity. The method gives also a unit skin friction and a unit base resistance for intermediate pile settlements. This allows us to simulate the load-settlement curve and to calculate the axial stiffness of the pile in any load range. For the purpose of analysis the calculation file is created which makes it possible to compare the results of calculation with those of the field-test. The comparative analysis of 37 square 0.3 m × 0.3 m and 0.4 m × 0.4 m piles in clays and sands was carried out. The comparison shows a good agreement between the predicted and actual capacities and a satisfactory agreement between the predicted and actual slopes of the load-settlement curve in the range up to 40% of the ultimate pile capacity.

Omówiono metodę obliczania nośności i osiadania pali z uwzględnieniem bezpośredniego wykorzystania wyników badań sondą statyczną CPT. Dla oceny krzywej osiadania zastosowano funkcje transformacyjne. Przedstawiono analizę wykorzystując wyniki próbnych obciążeń statycznych pali. Zaproponowane korelacje zostały zweryfikowane przy wykorzystaniu procedury weryfikacji hipotez statystycznych.

The method of calculation of bearing capacity and settlements of piles on the basis of direct use of CPT test results is presented. For the determination of load-settlement curve, up to ultimate load, the load-transfer functions' method is used. The filed investigations covered loading tests and CPT testing made in the area of piling. The correlations obtained were next verified using verification procedure for statistical hypotheses.

The paper presents results of a research project aimed on collecting and evaluating results of loading tests of CFA piles constructed in Poland. For the analysis about 80 test results have been collected from several pile contractors. The tested piles of 400 mm to 1000 mm in diameter were embedded in various soils on many sites throughout Poland. The analysed results are representative for the actual piling practice. The evaluation of results enabled to derive typical data describing dimensions, bearing capacity and settlement of piles. The data obtained are useful for prediction of a pile axial stiffness in the range of working loads.
