A key issue related to creating national spatial data infrastructure is building of metadata bases and services providing them. The paper presents various kinds of metadata and their significance, and the scope of their use in geoinformatics both for administering data and searching for them. Full advantage of metadata may be taken only where standards are applied. They permit to create metadata bases in a uniform way, and they use the same mechanisms for searching and sharing them across the Internet. Currently, the most often used standards for describing spatial data are ISO 19115 of the International Standardization Organization and the norm of the United States Federal Geographic Data Committee . FGDC. In Poland the obligation to create metadata bases is introduced by a 2001 regulation of the Minister of the Regional Development and Construction. Unfortunately, it only defines the scope of metadata bases and does not impose the obligation of adhering to standards. Consequently, Polish servers providing metadata do not apply standards, or they only use description close to the general standard . the Dublin Core. This is probably the reason why no catalogue server providing metadata about the Polish resources has been registered in the Global Spatial Data Infrastructure. In the second part of the paper the author describes 3 variants of the project to build metadata bases for the national geodesic and cartographic databases according to the recommendations of the OGC consortium.
