"Serce miasta" jest kapitalnym pojęciem badawczym i twórczym. Zawiera ono esencję wartości urbanistycznych. Przypomina o ponadczasowych wartościach miasta, które osiągnęły wyżyny w historii, a obecnie borykają się z trudnościami. Jednak kultura ponowoczesna wnosi w te wartości nowe życie i czyni je aktualnymi. Takie wartości w najwyższym stopniu osiąga nowojorski Manhattan, który dzięki nim może pretendować do pozycji urbanistycznego "serca świata".

"The Heart of The City" is a great idea, both scientific as well artistic. It contains the essence of values concerning urbanism. It helps to remember about evergreen values of cities, which achieved high standards in the past, but nowadays they suffer difficulties, both functional and aesthetic. Hopefully the postmodern culture inserts inside those traditional values a new life, thus makes them useful. Those values rise a summit in the New Yorker Manhattan, which thanks to that can be nominated to position of "The Heart of The World".

Problem umiejscowienia "serca współczesnego miasta" nie jest tak oczywisty i banalny, jakby się mogło wydawać. Temat ów można bowiem rozpatrywać w różnych kategoriach, kontekstach, w odniesieniu do hierarchii społecznych odczuć i uczuć własnych bądź też wg indywidualnie narzuconych reguł filozoficzno-organicznych. "Serce miasta" historycznie ukształtowanego to rynek. "Serce miasta/osiedla" to także ulica, plac osiedlowego komercyjno-kulturowego centrum, miejsce wyznaczone przez lokalną społeczność i przez nią nominowane. Wreszcie "serce miasta" to miejsce w swoim sercu, w sensie indywidualnych, nawet palimptycznych odczuć każdego mieszkańca miasta lub przybysza, gdzie nasze serce doznaje ekstatycznego pobudzenia; to miejsce unikatowe, z jego spirit of the place, a nawet swoistym sacrum.

The question where "the heart" of the contemporary town should be located is not so obvious and easy as it seems to be. This problem may be considered in many different categories; in social and personal context, or according to individually accepted philosophical and organic principles. "The heart of the town", historically constituted, is formed by its market square. "The heart of the satellite town/housing estate" is formed by the streets, commercial and cultural centers chosen by local community. Finally, "the heart of the town" is also the place in the citizen's heart, experienced individually by the citizens and the newcomers thanks to its unique atmosphere, its spirit of the place and its sacrum.
