The present paper gives an overview of the literature concerning the speciation of manganese in soil and solutions. The problem of speciation was approached in two different aspects: as a problem of the separation of a definite chemical form of the metal in the material under investigation with the simultaneous protection of separateness conditions of the residual forms and a problem of selecting an analytical methods of determination of manganese in the prepared material, generally in solution. Possibilities of separation and determination of some forms of manganese: Mn(II), Mn(III) and MN(IV) have been described in the literature in the last years. Different analytical methods have been proposed, spectrometry techniques above all; and among other things, the Atomic Spectrophometry (AAS), spectrofluorometry, X-ray fluorescence analysis and spectrophotometric analysis were used for detection. This work also reviews the mineralization methods concerning manganese total in soil, rocks and sediments; likewise the prospects of the determination of Mn total content. So far, most investigations have examined the overall concentration of Mn total in soils and sediments, for example by Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES) and Inductively Coupled Plasma mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). The described literature data indicate dynamic and multidirectional development of research work in the field of speciation of manganese in soil and solutions in last years.
