Article focuses on the modern transformation of spatial typology of shopping centers, or malls. In light of an on-going crisis of brick-and-mortar shopping centers, accentuating visitor’s experience in their physical environment becomes a promising trend, while analysis shows that recreational communication space serves as an important factor of their modern spatial transformation. Such a space defines the mode of connection of functional parts of a shopping center, acting as the structure-forming element to a mixed-use system. It also supports non-commercial, public functions, and serves as the driver of visitor’s experience, influencing it through its architecture. Modern transformation of spatial typology of shopping centers highlights the continuing specialization of their types suitable for different roles in contemporary situations. Thus, the semantic and architectural articulation of recreational communication space in the design process is crucial for emphasizing the specifics of a particular spatial type of a modern shopping center, and can help in forming its distinct sense of place in visitor’s perception.

Na obszarach intensywnych walk ostatniej fazy II wojny światowej, których przykładem może być Czarnków i jego okolice, można zaobserwować współwystępowanie dwóch różnych form pochówków wojennych. Z jednej strony są to zbiorowe mogiły żołnierzy radzieckich, a z drugiej rozproszone groby niemieckich okupantów. Te pierwsze charakteryzują się zazwyczaj arbitralną lokalizacją i areliginą formą, wynikającą z sowieckiej ideologii, natomiast pochówki żołnierzy niemieckich są często zapomniane i anonimowe. W pracy podjęto próbę upamiętnienia ofiar wojny obu stron, uwzględniając charakter i tożsamość miejsca pochówków.

Czarnków town and commune in North-West Poland are examples of the areas where intensive fights took place during the last phase of World War II. Coexistence of 2 different types (spatial forms) of military burial sites can be found there: (1) collective graves of Soviet soldiers; and (2) scattered graves of German soldiers. Graves of the first type are usually characterized by an arbitrary, exposed location and irreligious form, resulting from the Soviet ideology. By contrast, the graves of German soldiers are often neglected and anonymous, located in old cemeteries (situation 1) or in other places (situation 2). This study is an attempt to commemorate war victims of both nations, considering the character and sense of place of the burial sites.
