On the interpretation of seismic cone penetration test (SCPT) results

The paper deals with the methodology of performing and interpretation of seismic cone penetration test (SCPT). This type of test is used to determine velocity of the seismic wave in the soil medium. This study is focused on shear wave. The wave is triggered on the ground surface by hitting an anvil with a sledgehammer. Then, vibrations induced at different depths are measured. Based on recorded measurements wave velocity (Vs) and thus also small strain shear modulus Gmax may be calculated. An interpretation of exemplary seismic test results is presented. Crossover and cross-correlation methods are discussed and another, more adequate one is featured and then applied in the interpretation example. Conditions for correct test performance and interpretation are discussed.

Artykuł przedstawia rozpoznanie wybranych cech podłoża gruntowego na podstawie pomiarów wykonanych sondą SCPTU. Posługując się kilkoma klasyfikacjami, ustalono profil geologiczny. Dokonano oceny stanu gruntu i modułu ścinania w oparciu o obowiązujące Normy Polskie oraz zaczerpnięte z literatury korelacje pomiędzy wielkościami pomierzonymi, a wyznaczanymi. Przedstawiono metodykę badań sejsmicznych sondą typu GEOTECH 220-04.

This article presents the identification of selected characteristics of subsoil based on measurements taken with an SCPTU probe. Profiles of soil were established by using several geological classifications. The estimation of the soils condition and sheer module are based on the mandatory Polish Standards as well as the correlations between measured and calculated values taken from professional literature. The methodology of seismic testing with the GEOTECH 220-04 probe is also presented.
