Content available Some observations on the design of noise barriers
EN
The issue connected with effectiveness of noise barriers has been the subject of numerous considerations among acousticians. On the one hand, noise barriers are still the most popular and the most frequently used protection against traffic noise, on the other hand, however, the excessive number of noise barriers and the results of research focusing on effectiveness of the existing barriers make us reflect whether it is reasonable to use them. Very often low effectiveness of noise barriers is related to a badly conducted designing process. This article presents the basic mistakes made by noise barriers’ designers and the consequences thereof. Next, the paper describes the appropriate approach to the process of the noise barriers’ design which consists in the use of computer methods and conducting of a detailed analysis of the acoustic field’s distribution both behind the barrier and on the facades of the acoustically protected buildings.

Content available User Interface – Standards and Research Tools
EN
The article outlines a wide range of issues related to human computer interface. The key concept here is the interface, however it may be defined. After presenting in short interface history, the interface research tools are discussed, especially eye movement tracing equipment. Principles of interface design (screen layout, error prevention, interaction design) are discussed later in more detail. A short presentation of specific issues – mobile phones and advertising banners follows. Interface concepts in development finish the article.

Content available remote Another Look at a Model for Evaluating Interface Aesthetics
EN
Gestalt psychologists promulgated the principles of visual organisation in the early twentieth century. These principles have been discussed and re-emphasised, and their importance and relevance to user interface design is understood. However, a limited number of systems represent and make adequate use of this knowledge in the form of a design tool that supports certain aspects of the user interface design process. The graphic design rules that these systems use are extremely rudimentary and often vastly oversimplified. Most of them have no concept of design basics such as visual balance or rhythm. In this paper, we attempt to synthesize the guidelines and empirical data related to the formatting of screen layouts into a well-defined model. Fourteen aesthetic characteristics have been selected for that purpose. The results of our exercise suggest that these characteristics are important to prospective viewers.

Content available remote A Method for Determining the Properties of Multi-Screen Interfaces
EN
An important aspect of screen design is aesthetic evaluation of screen layouts. While it is conceivable to define a set of variables that characterize the key attributes of many alphanumeric display formats, such a task seems difficult for graphic displays because of their much greater complexity. This article proposes a theoretical approach to capture the essence of artists' insights with seven aesthetic measures for graphic displays. The formalized measures include symmetry, sequence, cohesion, regularity, homogeneity, rhythm, and order and complexity. The paper concludes with some thoughts on the direction which future research should take.
