Educational spaces for students with autism spectrum disorders

This study aims to present the relationship between the architectural surroundings and the needs of children with autism spectrum disorders in the educational environment. Therefore, it began with identifying the special needs of children with ASDs (Autism Spectrum Disorder) and the ways in which these needs are addressed in school designs carried out in the USA and Great Britain. The study also shows a few Polish attempts to create autism-friendly schools. Finally, an attempt was made to extend the paradigms of "universal design" with activities necessary to increase the comfort of using educational institutions by children with autism spectrum disorders.

W niniejszym opracowaniu przedstawiono zależności między otoczeniem architektonicznym a potrzebami dzieci ze spektrum autyzmu w środowisku edukacyjnym. Rozpoczęto od wskazania specjalnych potrzeb dzieci z ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) i sposobów, w jaki odpowiada się na te potrzeby w projektach szkół zrealizowanych w USA i w Wielkiej Brytanii. W artykule pokazano też nieliczne polskie próby tworzenia szkół przyjaznych autystykom, a na końcu podjęto próbę rozszerzenia paradygmatów „projektowania uniwersalnego” o działania konieczne do zwiększenia komfortu użytkowania placówek edukacyjnych przez dzieci ze spektrum autyzmu.

Health-affirming landscapes and sustainable architecture of modern schools

Modern schools face numerous challenges. They need to teach children about the need for sustainable development. Thus, school buildings and premises should be designed as living examples of the pursuit of sustainability. Moreover, green school grounds have the potential to become health-affirming landscapes. This paper discusses the close relationship between the concept of health-affirming everyday landscapes and sustainability in modern energy-efficient school design. In the first part of the paper, a literature review concerning the concept of health-affirming landscapes for children and teenagers and sustainability in school design is presented. In the second part, selected case studies of new energy-efficient schools in Poland and France are examined.

Współczesna szkoła stoi przed licznymi wyzwaniami. Uczy dzieci o potrzebie zrównoważonego rozwoju, zatem zarówno teren szkoły, jak i jej budynek powinny być żywymi przykładami rozwiązań proekologicznych. Krajobraz terenu szkoły ma potencjał do promocji zdrowia. Artykuł omawia ścisły związek między koncepcją codziennych krajobrazów sprzyjających promocji zdrowia, a zrównoważonym projektowaniem nowoczesnych energooszczędnych szkół. W pierwszej części przedstawiono przegląd literatury dotyczący koncepcji krajobrazów sprzyjających promocji zdrowia dzieci i młodzieży oraz proekologicznego projektowania szkół. W drugiej części zanalizowano wybrane przykłady nowych energooszczędnych szkół w Polsce i Francji.

There are many factors to be taken into account as far as the architecture of schools is concerned. In the psychological context, factors resulting from the influence of the architectural environment on the frame of mind and behavior of the people receive a special meaning. The influence process is ongoing, as the perception of the surrounding environment is not just limited to intellectual and sensual reception, but takes place at the much deeper levels of subconsciousness as well, so called "experiencing" of architecture. Based on the research regarding "experiencing" of school architecture by pupils, preformed by Christian Rittelmeyer, some basic regularities in reception of school environment by the pupils have been shown. The features of design conditioning positive reception of school buildings by children have been indicated.
